Quentin Tarantino Defends Portrayal Of Bruce Lee In ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

“Bruce Lee was kind of an arrogant guy,” Tarantino said at a recent press junket in Moscow. The film depicts Lee (played by Mike Moh) swaggering around the set of “Green Hornet,” denigrating boxer Muhammad Ali and picking a street f*ght with the evenly matched stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt).

“The way he was talking, I didn’t just make a lot of that up. I heard him say things like that, to that effect. If people are saying, ‘Well he never said he could beat up Muhammad Ali,’ well yeah, he did. Not only did he say that, but his wife, Linda Lee, said that in her first biography I ever read. She absolutely said that,” the director continued.

Regardless, the scene happened in Cliff's daydream while he worked on Dalton's roof.

Bruce lee saying he could beat up Ali has nothing to do with this. They were both alive and in their prime when he was talking sh*t.

QT wants to justify disrespecting a dead legend. Idk why he didnt make a fictional character instead of using his name

One of Bruce Lee's biographers is fact checking Tarantino. Giving page number citations too.

No, it wasn’t a “daydream”. It was a flashback/memory.

The responses in this thread make it very clear a lot of people want to be mad at QT just to be mad at him.

Exactly... it's a fu*king fictional movie. Lee was used as a device to establish in the viewer's mind how tough Cliff Booth was. This sh*t is getting ridiculous.

It's corny as fu*k to use a dead man in a disrespectful and inaccurate way as a prop to your fictional character's development

People worry too much about paying respect to the dead. At the end of the day, we're all just worm food no matter who you are.

And I never really saw the scene as disrespectful either. Sure he gets tossed into a car, but he jumps right back up from it. Who the fu*k cares?

Bcuz then he wouldn't have gotten all this extra publicity and promotion for his movie and himself. And the movie wouldn't look special or standout among other movies that are out.

Not to downplay him as a filmmaker, I've enjoyed most of his stuff, but QT's movies rely on shock factor gimmicks (over the top violence/language/racial themes, etc.) with the exception of Jackie Brown. He's always relied on attention seeking gimmicks, regardless of how well he executes them.

It is what it is and I don't blame Bruce Lee folks for gettin at him.

yea, this is not the only movie to do this kind of thing so it’s whatever.

If you want to get mad then do the same for all the others which most people are not going to do. The other movie about Sharon Tate that came out this year was way worse than this scene

Bruce Lee never said that tho, a interviewer said he thinks Bruce could beat Ali. Bruce studied Ali and was a huge fan of his that's well documented. You can even see Ali:s movements in the way Bruce shuffles around before he f*ghts. Tarantino is a idiot and should have fact checked before he made such dumb statements

ya'll love defending this quack who tells the same story over and over in different settings.

he never grew as a film maker.

he also has a weird thing for sodomy and the liberal use of "******"
