In the auto industry, business is booming for the undertaker.

Automakers are k!lling vehicle models at a steady clip – largely because buyer preferences are changing.

It’s all part of a sweeping shift into SUVs and crossovers, which offer more space, a higher stance and fuel economy that’s vastly better than a decade ago. About 1 in 2 vehicles sold in 2019 will be SUVs or crossovers, according to projections by car-buying advice site Edmunds.

“Primarily it’s a shift away from passenger cars – compacts, hatchbacks, those types of vehicles,” said Matt DeLorenzo, senior managing editor of Kelley Blue Book.

Several vehicles that are being put out of their misery are hybrids of some form, which Americans have been reluctant to buy with gasoline below $3 per gallon since 2014.

Discontinuing vehicles is not something the automakers do lightly, in part because they’ve invested substantial time and money into marketing and developing those models.

Take the Volkswagen Beetle, for example. It’s an iconic brand with seven decades of name recognition and an iconic silhouette.

But the 2019 model will be the final one. At least for a while.

If there’s one thing to remember about the auto industry, it’s that goodbye isn’t necessarily forever. After all, in 2019 Ford will revive the Ranger pickup, Toyota will revive the Supra sports car and Honda will bring back the Passport SUV.

As we welcome back those vehicles, we’re waving goodbye to these:

[pic - click to view]

Ford Taurus
This is not the first time Ford decided to end production of this large sedan. But it could be the last. Large cars are falling out of favor. At one point, the Taurus was one of the most popular cars in America. Those days are long gone.

[pic - click to view]

Ford Focus
This compact sedan perished as Ford pivots its focus toward SUVs and pickups. Ford had only 12,000 Focus cars left as of early December. Get it while you still can.

[pic - click to view]

Chevrolet Impala
Like the Taurus, this large sedan once occupied prime real estate in the American automotive landscape. Despite a critically acclaimed redesign earlier this decade, it couldn’t overcome the sedan segment’s demise.

[pic - click to view]

Chevrolet Cruze
GM bet big on this compact sedan earlier this decade, and it paid off for a while. But sales have suffered during the SUV boom. Its demise has placed GM’s plant in Lordstown, Ohio, at serious risk of closing.

[pic - click to view]

Chevrolet Volt
Billed as an emblem of GM’s engineering prowess and pivot toward alternative propulsion vehicles, this vehicle essentially invented the concept of the plug-in hybrid. It was critically acclaimed and generated a loyal base of enthusiasts.

But sales never reached initial expectations, and GM is turning its attention to battery-powered cars that don’t have a backup gas generator like the Volt.

[pic - click to view]

Volkswagen Touareg
Volkswagen will continue to sell this model in foreign markets but not in the U.S. Here, it’s now selling the Atlas large SUV and the Tiguan crossover, with plans to introduce more SUVs.

[pic - click to view]

Volkswagen Beetle
This two-door car has one of the most iconic silhouettes in the auto industry. But Americans don’t want to hunch over to get into cars anymore.

[pic - click to view]

Hyundai Azera
This attempt at a luxury sedan never panned out. The Korean automaker pivoted its luxury efforts toward an altogether new brand called Genesis, which is struggling to gain sales traction.

[pic - click to view]

Honda CR-Z
This compact hybrid had bad timing, entering the market just as hybrid sales were falling off a cliff.

[pic - click to view]

Ford C-Max
This model, which was offered in hybrid and plug-in versions, had a strong run out of the gate but eventually fell prey to the same industry trends that undermined the CR-Z.

[pic - click to view]

Toyota Prius V
This large version of the Prius hybrid hasn’t been manufactured since the 2017 model-year, but it’s still registering sales, according to Edmunds.

[pic - click to view]

Nissan Juke
Nissan’s quirky subcompact crossover has given way to a new little crossover called the Nissan Kicks.

[pic - click to view]

Cadillac CT6 and XTS
These large luxury sedans were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Luxury buyers with this much money to spend and a desire for space are buying SUVs.

[pic - click to view]

Cadillac ATS
This compact luxury sedan was designed as a competitor to industry stalwarts such as the BMW 3-series. It couldn’t overcome the Cadillac brand’s struggles and the compact sedan segment’s implosion.

The problem is everybody started making their cars look like Hondas. Thats where Cadillac fu*ked up. All they cars looked like mf Hondas.

V8 only tho. A V6 Camaro is basically a Malibu couple.

The only people who should be driving V6 "muscle" cars are strippers
Wouldn’t go that far, they have a place definitely feel lighter on their feet. Arguably the pinnacle sports car never needed one and they’re leaning towards that moreso than muscle car, there’s no factory V8 911 FWIW.

Xts is a piece of sh*t, my buddy has one, when he got it towed cuz it wouldn't start he seen a next one coming on a flatbed.

Caddy's are overrated af

Also
Fusion replacing the taurus
Fiesta replacing the focus

sh*t is more rebranding than anything.

If not mistaken, my pops pay like 800 per tire being replaced on it because of something that the factory did (these companies are REALLY making it difficult almost impossible for DIY jobs), also something with their battery is sh*t too. I believe you have to call a certified caddy specialist to have it changed or something to effect.

& my pops can literally do every single thing on a vehicle in regards to repairs, aside from major engine rebuild....really pissed him off at how much they're forcing consumers to do business with them & affiliates.

Since my testicles react to gravity I buy used cars cash. This means nothing to me.

Paid $700 for an avalanche and have to swap the transfer case already . Good thing ima off it to a sucker since I got the motor mounts swapped on my other truck.

I'm on 2 wheels when the weather is consistently above 40° again anyway

I'm not a fan and sales seem to reflect most aren't either but if you like the new 19 that's cool. The car loss it's aggressiveness it had when the 6th gen was introduced to me.

Sad day to see the end of the impala. 60 years strong and very few models were sh*tty. Really only 90-94, those were terrible years for all cars though.

Giving my ‘15 to my son, and I’ll be getting a ‘19.

All that other sh*t can go

V6 Camaros, Challengers, and Mustangs are stripper cars and I clown any grown man that has one. No exceptions.

It's not a V8 vs V6 thing. I think Porches look like old woman cars, but I fully respect what they can do with a V6. There are other manufacturers who make great V6s too, and even some Subaru 4 cylinders are good, powerful engines.

This is about buying a muscle car without the muscle. If you buy a muscle car you buy V8, and if you can't afford the V8 then buy something else. The dudes that drive those weak V6s always wanna race too. Overcompensating for buying a knock off muscle car.

The current Camaro is the ugliest Camaro of all time. It's not selling at all and they're already looking at changing front fascia next year.

I have to disagree, l feel if you think someone is less of a person for having a v6 muscle car then you are the one that overcompensating since you feel its a need to have a v8. Times are changing fords 4 banger turbo stang can run ls1 camaro numbers and chevy and ford both have a v6 turbo motors that pushes 550hp +
