I used to always rap the Grand Puba verse when his commercial came on. The 5 Deadly Venoms was a great ad too.

I miss those days when hip hop in general was seen as marketable. Nowadays it's only the mainstream acts that are considered "marketable". No slight to them, these old ads just show you don't have to be a superstar to make a good ad and also show respect to a culture.
I think back in the day the corperate world looked at hiphop as all on the same level. They didnt care too much about who was a superstar or not they just wanted something to appeal to a hiphop audience. To the advantage of hiphop culture at the time they allowed for more creativity in the marketing because I dont think they had a formula. I dont think you would see a 5 deadly venoms or a voltron type ad today that would be tooo underground.

today you get urban marketing like this. While the actual production is well the concept isnt very creative at all.

Damned if you do, damned if you dont. Putting Nas and Az, two n*ggas who wasnt selling like that is pandering?

Drake one of the few mf's on the thread that sold records on that level. So who are we pandering to?
Yes it is pandering. Look at the history of coke and tell me they give a fu*k about black people or minorities in general. They donate and push laws that help destroy low income kommunities. No way around it tbh

I work for a marketing research firm that does a lot of business with Coke. The brand delivered to us an RFP late last year that looked to understand how Sprite influences the culture. It was worded in a way that made it seem like they were the ones that drove it, and as an original people, it definitely rubbed me the wrong way - not remembering how exactly it was worded.

DO NOT QUOTE ME

Right. Nowadays they'll laugh you out the room if you were to pitch a commercial with Joell Ortiz and Joyner Lucas rapping about Sprite. On the flipside, the level of stardom in black marketing shows how far hip hop has come along.

Mega conglomerates aren't for any cultures but your wallets and making money.

Don't be fooled by some silly commercials which sole purpose is to market and sell.

true. But if they made commercials today like they did in the 90s and early 2ks youd probably have spitta or freddie gibbs doing a sprite commercial

Most def, they would follow the same formula. These times are more brand/influencer based so companies aren't willing to risk going with lesser known talent.

I feel you, but they will go and get someone like KRS Old a*s and do a commercial right now. They got some people in that office that simply love Hip Hop!

Gotta respect it.
