Prince’s breakthrough into the mainstream will get a new reassessment this year when 1999, the blockbuster 1982 album that contained the hits “1999” and “Little Red Corvette,” comes out as a souped-up, remastered reissue on November 29th. The massive super-deluxe edition of the reissue contains five CDs and a DVD (or 10 LPs and a DVD) with 35 previously unreleased audio tracks and a full concert film that was previously unofficially circulated. The singer’s estate is also issuing pared-down versions of the reissue, including a two-CD (or four-LP) “Deluxe Edition” and a single-CD (or two-LP) basic edition.

In addition to featuring all of the music Prince put out in 1982, the super deluxe edition contains material he recorded between November 1981 and January 1983. There’s also a live album that features a late-night concert Prince performed (after an earlier show that same day) in Detroit on November 30th, 1982, and the concert film features footage from a gig at the Houston Summit on December 29th, 1982.

The accompanying book features Prince’s handwritten lyrics for “Little Red Corvette” and other songs from that period, as well as rare photos by Allen Beaulieu and images of the analog reels the Purple One recorded on. The Super Deluxe edition also contains liner notes by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, radio host Andrea Swensson, and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl.

The reissue comes on the heels of Originals, an album featuring Prince’s versions of songs that other artists ended up recording, like the Bangles’ “Manic Monday.” “He once told me that if you ever want to write a hit song, just act as if you’re writing for five-year-olds,” singer Jill Jones, who is featured on the song “1999,” said in a Rolling Stone article about Originals. “I asked him if he really could write hits if he wanted to, and he said, ‘Yeah, I just get bored with that.'”

People were wondering if Warner Bros would put out another release before they lose his catalog to Sony next year. Hopefully, Moonbeam Levels ia an upgrade over the version they released already and all the rest of the unreleased stuff has good sound.

Not interested after paying good money for piano and a microphone and being reminded of why prince kept so much stuff in the vaults. It's because he loved his music and fans too much to insult them with the D-Sides. He put out the best of the best, on his own terms. All that sh*t went out the window when he was found dead.

I always feel torn. On one hand I want to hear some unreleased music but on the other hand Prince only put out what he wanted us to hear. So you feel a bit disrespectful listening...

Prince always said in interviews that you would hear the stuff in the vault one day. Even, if it meant waiting until he was gone. He didn't consider the music subpar. He just got bored easily and would move on to something else before stuff could get released.

Looking at the track list, I can see one song that should have been included. The orignal version of "Extraloveable."

I can understand wanting to hear it. I gave the whole "back to the vaults" a chance with piano and microphone vinyl and at first it was exciting.... But he was practicing. They were not finished tracis suitable for release with mad flubs. And the b side was coked out and not good

this was Prince's biggest beef in the 80s with Warner Bros

he'd have like 20-30 songs every 6-9 months or so that he wanted to release, but the label insisted on the traditional model of working each album with promo, singles and tours

Prince wanted to release double and triple albums when the label just wanted a single or 2 with filler

Usually I would agree. Prince is a little different than most artists. He would record fully realized albums and his label wouldn't release them. That's when he started giving them away to other artists like The Time, Vanity, Mazarati, The Family, Sheila E and others. He wrote and performed all of The Times first 3 records by himself. While releasing music under his own name and still had full albums of material leftover.

Take 1986-87 for instances. He had recorded an album called Camille. He shelved it and was going to release another album called The Black Album. He decided to scrap that and ended up releasing the Loves*xy album. 3 different albums. At the same time he worked on Sheila E's album. An album by Sheena Easton and started work on the next album for The Time, Pandemonium. This was all after he just released the double album, Sign O' The Times in early 1987. But, wait there is more. There are 2-3 more albums from that same time period that he recorded that have not been released.

The man just had crazy creativity flowing from him in the 80's.

You can see the difference in how he released music once he left WB. He was releasing 2-3 albums at a time. Not all of it was spectacular. But, at least he was able to express himself how he wanted.

In case y'all didn't know. Sony got control of his post-WB catalog earlier this year and so far they have re-released 9 of those albums. Many of them were out of print and going for a lot of money. Next year they get control of the rest of his catalog (minus 5 albums that were soundtracks for movies produced by Warner Brothers).

The Originals album was the one that he owed Tidal. So, with that obligation fulfilled. Starting next year all his studio stuff will be under one label. That is when it is expected that the "vault" will really be opened.

I posted the track Extraloveable earlier. I can understand why that is not getting released. He talks about raping the girl at the end of the song. They could have faded out before that part. But, there would be people complaining about that.

This is another track they could have added to this set. Again, the lyrics are r*pey.

"I would r*pe you if I must"

I hope they don't go "safe" with the catalog and hold back songs because of the lyrics.

I was checked on a post I made on another forum that is less gossipy and more music centric. So, let me make a correction on my previous post.

Sony doesn't take over the catalog until 2021. That leaves Warner Bros a year or so to do some more deluxe releases like this "1999" and "Purple Rain."

I would like a "Sign O' The Times" box if I had a say.

WB could think out the box and do a Batman soundtrack release. I wouldn't be mad at that either.

The Houston show which will be on the DVD.

Cool to see Bernie Grundman is mastering this. Should have good sound.

Agreed. Prince released what he deemed the best of the vault during his lifetime on his own terms
