Mysterious 'Oumuamua' floating in space might be alien, say Harvard researchers

‘Oumuamua represents a new class of thin
interstellar material, either produced naturally, through a yet
unknown process in the ISM or in proto-planetary disks, or of
an artificial origin.'

During the abrupt flyby, scientists made frantic observations of the object before it passed out of range of even the most-powerful telescopes. Ever since then, 'Oumuamua has provided scientists a seemingly endless supply of questions, with most answers still very much up in the air.

Astronomers got their first glimpse of 'Oumuamua on Oct. 19, 2017, through the Pan-STARRS1 telescope based in Hawaii, which is fine-tuned to catch temporary phenomena like passing comets. Right away, scientists knew this wasn't your average comet; its path was way too strange. They'd caught sight of the object on its way out of our solar system, so scientists are still trying to figure out where its journey began. ['Oumuamua: The Solar System's 1st Interstellar Visitor Explained in Photos]

'Oumuamua has also endured a bit of an identity crisis during its first year in the scientific literature. At first, astronomers thought it was a comet. Then, they realized there was no cloud of gas and dust enveloping the object, so they reclassified it as an asteroid. But that proved problematic when they realized it was moving faster than an asteroid ought to be, as if getting a little boost of speed from volatile materials evaporating off its surface, like those that form a comet's surrounding cloud.

Another puzzle is the object's strange shape: long and thin, something like six times longer than it is wide. That's unlike most cosmic objects, which are generally lumps. It's also spinning strangely, tumbling end over end like a stick tossed for a cosmic dog. Some of the hypotheses to explain that elongated shape are that 'Oumuamua had a messy run-in with an asteroid or that the incredible gravitational pull of a giant planet stretched the object.

Because they can't gather any more data about 'Oumuamua, scientists have turned their attention to spotting another such interstellar visitor, hoping to find one sooner rather than later. (Researchers have said the objects should be pretty common, and scientists had in fact been waiting for a flyby like 'Oumuamua's for decades.)

But regardless of the mysteries scientists may never be able to solve with the observations they did gather in time, one thing about 'Oumuamua is nearly certain: It's not an alien spaceship broadcasting back to its creators. Yes, they checked.'

UPDATE (02.05.19)

Harvard professor Avi Loeb has made countless headlines over the last year for his claims that a mysterious interstellar object spotted passing through our solar system could be an alien spacecraft.

It’s a suggestion that many other scientists have slammed as outlandish, but despite the mounting backlash, Loeb is sticking to his guns.

The seasoned astronomer has hundreds of publications under his belt, and insists that the possibility of extraterrestrial origins can’t be ruled out based on the current evidence alone.

And, he says the observations don’t line up with what’s expected of a rogue object that is not an active comet, as Oumuamua is predicted to be.

In the latest interview, Loeb has once again doubled down, maintaining that he will hold his position until the evidence shows otherwise.

Many people expected once there would be this publicity, I would back down,’ Loeb told The Washington Post.

‘If someone shows me evidence of the contrary, I will immediately back down.’

The unusual object, which has since come to be known as Oumuamua, was first spotted in 2017 by a team of astronomers operating the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope on Haleakala, Hawaii.

It’s the only confirmed interstellar visitor to date; the Hawaiian name 'Oumuamua translates to ‘visitor from afar arriving first.’

Follow-up observations with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and other instruments suggested it may be an asteroid that was ejected from its home system.

After Hubble detected sunlight reflecting off the object’s surface, NASA estimated the object to be thin and highly elongated, like a cosmic cigar that stretches roughly 2,600 feet (800 meters) at its longest.

The ejected asteroid hypothesis, however, so far can’t explain Oumuamua’s acceleration.

Loeb’s extraterrestrial explanation attempts to fill the information gaps.

Rather than a passively floating space rock, the researcher proposes the possibility that it may be an alien probe driven by a paper-thin light sail.

'We find that although very thin, such an object can travel over galactic distances, maintaining its momentum and withstanding collisional destruction by dustgrains and gas, as well as centrifugal and tidal forces,' Loeb and co-author Shmuel Bialy write in a paper published to Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The paper and the researcher’s subsequent claims have been met with harsh criticism.

Theoretical astrophysicist Ethan Siegel dismissed the pair’s findings as ’extraordinary, science-fiction level conjecture, with practically nothing more than their own speculation to back it up.’

‘We often say that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and in all of these cases the evidence is very, very ordinary indeed,’ Siegel wrote for his Forbes blog, Starts With a Bang.

‘It's worth keeping our mind open to the possibility that there's more out there in the Universe than we presently realize, but not to embrace those possibilities as likely in any way whatsoever.

‘When you leap to explanations that are fantastic, it's all too easy to forget about the most likely explanations, which often involve nothing more than the natural phenomena already present and well-understood in the Universe we know.’

For now, though, with no definitive evidence toward a natural explanation, it seems Loeb has no intention of swaying.

Sadly they don't have a real picture of what the object really looks like, so their computer generated model from that article description is bogus.

Kind of mind-boggling that they discount the suns effect on this object similar to how the voyagers were shot around planets to change both trajectory and speed.
