FLIGHT ATTENDANT UNION CALLS FOR STRIKE IF GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN AGAIN

The president of a union representing nearly 50,000 flight attendants is calling for a public strike if lawmakers aren’t able to reach a funding deal on Friday to keep the government open.

Sara Nelson, the president of the a*sociation of Flight Attendants,*told multiple news outlets, including Hill.TV that her union is planning demonstrations in major airports around the country on February 16.

“We are calling on the public on February 16th,” Nelson said in a "Rising" interview with Buck s*xton and Krystal Ball on Monday. “If we are in a day 36 of this shutdown for everyone to come to the airports.”

Nelson, who also called for a general strike in response to the partial government shutdown, argued that politics have no place when it comes to ensuring the safety and security of the traveling public.

“Everyone come to the airports and demand that this Congress work for us and get politics out of our safety and security,” she said.

Lawmakers have been adamant about avoiding another partial government shutdown, even though border security negotiations remain at an impasse.

The previous record 35-day partial government shutdown cost the economy billions of dollars and left an estimated 800,000 federal workers furloughed or working without pay.

Nelson said she personally spoke with air traffic controllers who still have not received all of their due pay, and she warned that some may never get this compensation back if the government closes again.

While the majority of federal workers have been able to collect lost pay, the a*sociated Press reported last week that hundreds of others across various agencies still have not received all of their due pay.

"Most of the air traffic controllers have not been made whole and will not be made whole until the March 5th check," Nelson told Hill.TV. "Now, if we go into a day 36th of a shutdown, that puts them into continued uncertainty and they might never get that back pay."

The Boston-based flight attendant added that forcing government employees to work without pay is “immoral,” and said that preventing such a move from happening again requires “bold action.”

“We have to ask, are we a country that’s willing to put up with people willing to work without pay — it’s immoral, it’s unjust and it requires really bold action,” she said.

The last shutdown eneded because of the issues happening in airports around the country.

Four and half more days left to come up with a solution.

Absolutely terrible, on both ends. The United States government for being so ticky tacky and these government workers

Both parties here take their jobs to serve the people and they are both putting themselves in front of us

I say vote out all these incumbents and fire and replace all who strike

Y’all failing us you gotta go

(That’s why unions are dangerous, just a pretty word for gang, nobodies going anywhere, we’re fu*ked)

Here’s something I don’t understand & maybe someone can educate me, but why can’t Congress change the law & allow people to apply for asylum while they’re still in their home country? Then if it’s approved they come... if it’s not, then they stay... or go elsewhere... but I feel like a huge part of the problem is the process, that they have to be physically in the US to declare...

It said 100s of people

I’m not to worried about those hundredsI’m sure they’ll be fine.

50,000 person strike over 100s of people missing a few weeks worth of checks ain’t right

The numbers aren’t crazy and people won’t be left homeless. Reach out to the community or your local church and I bet you can get help a couple weeks. People do it everyday. You made it sound like famine was coming

Perhaps Uber

This is why people want immigration reform, currently it takes entirely too long to get here legally. A good portion come to claim asylum because they are fearful for their life, what you're saying is to sit and wait possibly years to maybe get here & which is why they risk coming illegally because its worth the risk

How I make it sound like a famine is coming? By pointing out not everyone been paid? Dramatic much?

There is a process like that already in place. You can go to any US embassy in the world and say you want to seek asylum. Take asylum seekers in Syria and other war zones for example. The process takes on average 2-3 years and there is a lot of vetting involved. The more of a support system you have in the US the better. There is a whole industry that sponsor people and help them navigate through the process. Churches and pro-immigration groups have specialists to deal with that.

The thing is there is a a lot of ground (and oceans) between here and Syria. If you're resilient, you can come to US from Latin America by land and get to a physical border check in point. Which most people do. You are not necessarily fast tracked through the system by doing it that way. But, dealing with the system in person is a lot easier than thousands of miles away.

One of the main fears people have about going to embassies is most are under constant surveillance by the country they are located in. If you are a political dissident, it is not a good look to be seen interacting with a foreign government's officials. If you are trying to leave a country for non-political reasons like violence or crime. A country still would not look kindly on you for telling their "business" to foreigners.

The funny thing is one of the things trump has "offered" the Democrats in exchange for the money for the wall that will never be built is a process that is already in place. I wonder if he thinks no one had thought of it before and he's the one that came up with it the idea.

Yo this sh*t could cause a national emergency

Short story, last week my boss went to St. Paul, MN to visit another agency. He then flew to our NY office to meet with a client and sales rep we have out there. On his way back, they told him a flight attendant didn't show up and his flight would be delayed 2 hrs. So he went to grab some food. 5min later the attendant showed up and they boarded the plan and left. He went back to the gate only to find that his flight left even though they told him it was delayed 2hrs.

So 6hrs later he gets on another plan, waits on the tarmac for about 45min because of a mechanical problem. They flew a new part to he airport but didn't have approval for the part. So long story short, he ended up having to stay an extra night in NY, then got bused to JFK for a different flight who, you guess it, had a missing flight attendant which caused the plan to be delayed another 2hrs.

Let me tell you, yesterday morning was not the best time to have a meeting with him
