I mean you can look at it two ways.... either Jay-Z raps and respects your knowledge as a hip hop fan to already know where da references or interpolation come from so what's understood doesn't have to be explained.. (" I'm a writer
For myself and others
I say a B.I.G. verse I'm only biggin' up my brother
Biggin' up my borough
I'm big enough to do it
I'm that thorough
Plus I know my own flow is foolish"

Or Jay-Z isn't as nice as people think...

It think its more da former than da latter.....

Rap is a genre that constantly self-references itself and breaks its own fourth wall so in my conclusion this is a nothing burger.

True, but an important factor that is being overlooked is that ice t did the same thing himself. And as far as I know he didn't pay or give Schooly any writers credit

Damn, its Jay season. By the time Jay is 60 theres going to be a shady stroy about every aspect of his life.

I use to fu*k with Ice more. But lately im finding out he was a groomer/borderline pedo. To one of his kids moms.

I listen to the corey holcomb podcast shes a host, Darlene Ortiz she said They met when she was 17. But they waited until she was 18 to date.

I wanna give Ice the benefit, that he was like. I am going to honor you my lady & wait until midnight on your 18th

Maybe not on a record, but he's definitely payed homage to schooly D in podcast form... I remember vividly him giving credit where credit was due in a very early episode of Juan Epstein podcast with Rosenberg and Cypha sounds talking about his rap origins and taking that schooly D record to da west and using its embers to spark west coast gangsta rap.

You're right he definitely acknowledged Schooly, Idk how long it took him to do that lol, but he did.

I'm guessing ice feels a way because 99 problems is basically ONLY a*sociated with Jay, and considering the song was a hit he feels he deserves a few more props. I can't be mad at that.

I have so many questions.

So to follow your logic Jay Z paying for the usage of the sample but not giving "credit" to Ice T is worse than not paying for a sample but mentioning it on a podcast that 5 people probably heard. I have that right? Can Schooly pay any bills with this podcast credit, is it like Crypto or somthin? If Jay mentions Ice T on a podcast does that make everything ok?

Its not my logic, im describing da situation from ICE- T's point of view.

-what iced t is referencing is actually culturally & courtesy..

-He's framing his critique in terms of heralding respecting its origins.... its a taste and courteous things vs a monetary scenerio...

-ICE-T's point of view only has some validity since when you sign over rights for your IP to be used in other ways, you kinda give up da right to gripe about it it id doesn't live up to your expectations...

If you seen Vlad TVs interview with AZ da drug dealer and how he felt disgruntled with da process of how his intellectual property rights were bought by new line Cinema and adapted to a way where he wasn't all the way satisfied with its results, its da same idea...

Actor who played AZ in a follow up Vlad TV interview explains that once you sign over your rights can't really gripe about creative control or how much of a how much paying homage/Tribute is enough to fit your satisfaction.

Sure you paid me for work, but don't act like i dont exist either in its creative process when you make it a hit record....is his point.

Like i said before, jigga been doing this...its something people do in rap, some people have a flavour for it, some people find it unsavoury...its a taste thing.

Btw, Juan Epstein is probably da 1st rap podcast ever...u might wanna give it its proper due....

There's always been a contingent of rap fans outside boxden and in this forum that felt like Jay-Z didn't properly earn it his place among raps pantheon....

Some of it has some validity considering he was faking his notoriety early on when no one really cared about Jay-Z outside his core base (1996-1997) others will say he never really had his own year which also has some validity...

Jay-z's superpower has always been his enduring durability as being consistently good for a very long set of time...he basically outlasted a good portion of his counterparts...

Has he been unquestionably da king of raps in any year? I don't think so but does he earn his place has one of raps greats? absolutely.

Bingo.

That's always been a downside in letting people sample your work because if they do a better job your original essentially becomes Lost in time as a footnote....

Also time stops for no one so people are born everyday will hear da newer version da label is putting money to pump over da OG.... I'll give you an example EPMD first album strictly business is never spoken of in this era but if you play it front to back it's got so much original samples that rap acts from da '90s used and are more a*sociated with...

Let da Funk flow been out a decade+ before Nas sampled it for Nastrdamus but ill always a*sociate da track with esco because its where i heard it first....

Outrage over nuthin. You goofies act like hooks haven’t been borrowed for other songs throughout the entirety of hip hop. This instance wasn’t like some underhanded secret.

Jay paid the man for the usage of his hook. He’s not obligated to ensure his track isn’t more popular than Ice-T’s. They’re two entirely different songs minus the hook. No one remembers the lyrics to Ice T’s track because it wasn’t as impactful as Jay’s.

Ice T should get song writing credits and residuals. Trinidad James is listed for a writer on Uptown Funk for the line "don't believe me just watch"
They gonna defend who they want by any means.
