Cain Velasquez Eyes Title f*ght With Jon Jones If Daniel Cormier Retires

Cain Velasquez a former two-time heavyweight champion, who many still believe as the greatest heavyweight f*ghter in MMA history has been plagued by injuries that have waylaid his career.

Velasquez who’s now healthy and is returning to Octagon against former heavyweight title challenger Francis Ngannou in the main event of the UFC on ESPN 1, which will go down on February 17 at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

If Velasquez scores a win over Ngannou next month, of course, it’ll open the door to other big f*ghts in the division. And the one two-time UFC champion eyes the most is a f*ght with newly crowned light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who has a long-standing rivalry with his training partner Daniel Cormier.

Cormier who also happens to be current heavyweight champion. ‘DC’ already stated many times that he’ll retire from the sport when he turns 40 this march and before that he wants the biggest f*ght of his career against Brock Lesnar. As time passing by, this super f*ght is increasingly unlikely due to Lesnar’s drug test debacle, and he still owes commision a fine of $250,000. It’s also unclear how many f*ght Cormier has left. UFC president Dana White also want Cormier to postpone his retirement and f*ght Jones at heavyweight. In one of his Tweet Cormier said, he’d be open to f*ghting Jones for the third time if latter comes out clean.

‘Bones’ who already said he’s not interested in moving up to the heavyweight division to f*ght Cormier for the third time to prove his legacy. ‘Bones’ currently linked to facing Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC 235 on March 2. From the sounds of it, Cormier vs. Jones may never happen.

But hold your horses, Cain Velasquez said if his friend and training partner Daniel Cormier retires he’d be happy to take over the division. He recently told MMA f*ghting’s Shaun Al-Shatti, he hopes to f*ght ‘Bones’ one day and will try to make that happen.

MMA fans have been asking for Jones vs. Velasquez for years, and from the sounds of it, Velasquez is up for a challenge.

“I hope so,” Velasquez told MMA f*ghting of this potential f*ght this week. “I’ll try to make that happen.”

Velasquez last fought on July 2016 where he scored a first-round TKO win over Travis Browne at UFC 200.

Who wants to see Velasquez vs. Jones f*ght down the road?

I'll get excited about what he says when he can make it to the cage without injury and f*ght more than once every 2 years.

Bones gonna probably KO DC again and then the f*ght with Cain would be an epic storyline.. but as long as Cain could stay healthy we just might see this happen.. Miosic vs Bones is a good one too.. sh*t I just wanna see him beast out at HW see how he would do.. LHW ain't got much to offer him..

Why would Cain beat Jones?

Jones is undefeated and smashed DC twice who has as good a hw resume as Cain.....

"admitted it" Na he didnt. He just talking up a friend/teammate and Cain says the same.

@ Cains wrestling being WAY better and being stronger.

Cain said DC is the better wrestler (DC is his wrestling coach). And DC is def the better striker and has shown way more power in his hands (more power).

what are u talking about?

Steel sharpens steel, both Cain and DC owe a lot to each other for their successes. DC started off as the wrestling coach for Team AKA and Cain convinced him to do MMA. There's a lot of stories of these two having grueling training sessions.

DC's prime has lasted longer than Cain's and he has been much more durable through the years but there was a point when Cain was as good as anybody I have ever seen at HW. DC and Khabib have both adapted Cain's style of just putting pressure on your opponent until they crack.

Luke is incredibly skilled but he's just too arrogant for his own good and doesn't keep his hands up. Chin isn't that great either, I think he'll get clipped at LHW before he ever got a shot at the title.

Dominick Reyes and Johnny Walker are both interesting LHW prospects. I think both have a big 2019.
