Jhavonte Dean Will Be Miami’s Defensive X-Factor in 2017

With an inexperienced secondary coming into Coral Gables next season, Jhavonte Dean must be a stronghold for Miami to have success.

Jhavonte Dean is a local product.

Despite spending the last two seasons at Blinn College playing JUCO football in Texas, Dean has Miami roots out of South Dade High School. The same high school that 2018 Miami commit DJ Ivey attends, and former receiver Tyre Brady graduated from.

But Dean’s role in 2017 will transcend the impact made at his high school, as he is projected to be Miami’s starting outside cornerback in August. Malek Young has been projected to take a Corn Elder caliber leap as well, but at 6’2”, Dean presents more size than Young on the outside.

More than any measurable, however, Dean will bring much needed experience to the secondary.

“Experience,” cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph said on National Signing Day. “We have a young secondary now and Jhavonte is a guy that’s gonna come in from Blinn College over there in Texas, and [is] just a talented young man.”

Rumph said that Dean is a driven player who knows what he wants to do, and will fit in well with Miami’s cornerback room.

Dean was an Alabama commit before choosing the ‘Canes on signing day, and ultimately chose to return home to the team he grew up watching.

“He’s a South Florida man coming back home,” Rumph said. “Coach Banda, Coach Diaz, and I we all really were on him -- high on him. [We] just stayed persistent with him till the final end.”

Miami’s persistence paid off and Dean will enter camp along with two other corners expected to get a large amount of playing time -- Trajan Bandy and Dee Delaney.

At 6’1” Delaney will bring height to Coral Gables, but other than him, Dean brings the most size to the team.

He will be invaluable because of his height and length, and should be physical at the line of scrimmage as well. Dean will most likely add weight to his 180 pound frame, but even at his current measurables, he will make an impact on the outside.

According to 247sports.com, Dean runs a 4.30 forty yard dash time, and ranked as the number two junior college cornerback in the nation last year. His speed is a large draw for fans, and Dean put it on display on this kick return in high school

Although Miami has a multitude of defensive backs committed for 2018, the failure to sign Christopher Henderson and Brian Edwards on signing day resulted in a lack of depth on this year’s roster.

Dean will have to be a rock on the outside for Miami because there are limited players to turn towards off the bench. Dean’s measurables and intangibles suggest that he will have success at the next level, and was a vital a*set for Miami throughout the recruiting process.

With an experienced front seven Miami’s defensive backs may hold the key to the ‘Canes defensive potential, and Jhavonte Dean will have to be a driving factor in the group's success.

i think Dean is gonna do well for us, looking forward to seeing these guys push each other to get PT

On Thursday afternoon, Miami added another key piece to the 2019 recruiting class when DT Derick Hunter committed to the Hurricanes

Already 6’5” 251lbs, Hunter plays DE at the HS level but has been recruited at DT. He figures to add size and strength as he continues to develop over the course of his last 2 HS seasons.

Hunter is a jumbo athlete with good athleticism. Much like RJ McIntosh before him, Hunter will need to add size and technique as he continues his developmental path.

With Hunter’s commitment, Miami now has 4 commits in the 2019 recruiting class. Hunter committed to Miami from a list of 23 offers, including Florida, Florida State, Louisville, Michigan, Oregon, South Carolina, and UCLA. He joins WR Brieon Fuller, LB Jesiah Pierre, and LB/S Diamante Howard as the commitments in that recruiting class.

2019 class starting off in a very promising way

Brieon Fuller tho kid is gonna be a PROBLEM!!!!

Russell is a well-regarded player among his peers, and has a solid skillset as an in the box Safety. As stated above, he has decommitted from Miami and will look elsewhere for his commitment.

Peter Ariz of CanesInSight.com reported that Russell was a take for Miami, and the Canes did not drop him from this class. Ariz further reported that Miami will not re-recruit Russell and move in another direction. My read on that is that Russell, while good, is not a priority for this class. If he were, Miami would stay engaged in this recruitment. But, they’re not, and that action proves the point, to me.

Furthermore, there’s been talk (even in the SOTU comments section) that Russell’s parents would prefer him to leave the city of Miami for college. That does happen in certain situations, so that wouldn’t surprise me if true.

Miami has plenty of targets on the board at DB, and there’s a wealth of talent at that position in South Florida for this class. While losing Russell’s commitment is a minor setback, Miami will replace him with a similar caliber player if not upgrade at this scholarships slot.

We wish Randy Russell all the best in his future endeavors, and look forward to seeing what Miami does to replace him and close the rest of the 2018 recruiting class

i liked Russell as a project type player going forward cause of his hitting ability but from what ive read the staff just wasnt impressed with any type of progress he was making and decided to go in a different direction, he still would have been a take but they feel they can fill that role well with someone else... i still think he could end up being a solid player for someone but they will need to put in some work on him and not expect him to be an impact player out the gate

saw James Cook bounced from FSU... he wasnt gonna get much PT there with the other RBs they got and he aint better than the 2 we got coming in so my guess is he will either be at Georgia, Clemson or Florida

Tyson Campbell ran a 4.27 at the Opening

i really really hope we land this kid... ive been hearing all kinds of talk about him... some feel hes a Cane lean others feel he really isnt

the kid is gonna shine if he comes to The U, hopefully we can secure him for our class

True, but he put the most players in the NFL.

People are wrong for thinking he needed a Championship to be validated.

It's guys like Gene Chizik and Larry Coker who won chips.

Richt is doing great things here... the fact he had to do ALL this while cleaning up Goldens mess is pretty amazing

when people bring up Richt going to Miami and saying he will be failure there cause of what he did at Georgia i just mention Chris Peterson going to UW... i guess cause he never won a title at Boise means UW is gonna suck?? i think thats been proved wrong already lol ... coaching changes can be good for the school and the coach, even Richt said coming to Miami he felt like a new man... another thing people dont bring up is the staff surrounding him, this current staff at Miami fits GREAT with what Richt wants from this team and the type of players they covet .. there are many variables at play but the haters just dont wanna talk about those, just easier for them to hate
