Feb 13 - NASA Spots 'Potentially Hazardous' Asteroid coming close to Earth

NASA Spots 'Potentially Hazardous' Asteroid Rapidly Approaching Earth

NASA has confirmed that an asteroid larger than the tallest man-made structure in the world is currently travelling towards Earth at a speed of almost 34,000 miles per hour. Thankfully, it'll likely miss us by a few million miles.
According to International Business Times, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) identified that the "potentially hazardous" asteroid could come close to intersecting with our planet's path on February 15, 2020, at 6:05 a.m.

"Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are currently defined based on parameters that measure the asteroid's potential to make threatening close approaches to the Earth," NASA said in a statement.

The colossal space rock, which is expected to pass over our planet from a distance of around 3.6 million miles, is estimated to have a diameter of around 3,250 feet, making it large enough to potentially "trigger a nuclear winter and mass extinction events" should it collide with Earth.

For decades, films have dealt with the subject of potentially dangerous asteroid collisions. In fact, mankind was nearly destroyed by a giant space rock not once, but twice, in the 90s with Mimi Leder's Deep Impact and Michael Bay's Armageddon - but which of these apocalyptic flicks has stood the test of time? Check out our Armageddon vs. Deep Impact comparison feature to find out.

Horsefeathers.

A half a mile rock is extinction level? A third of that will burn off in the atmosphere.

And you know this because you survived and have lived through an asteroid collision with earth?

But I always think of this film if an asteroid collision was really imminent to hit earth. The governments would try to hide that sh*t, to avoid mass panic.

The sound when that sh*t entered our atmosphere would be something biblical, along with the shockwaves of it simply entering before it hits anything.

You ever see that video of the one in Russia a couple years ago?

It would be fu*ked up for all things at ground zero. But Extinction level is exaggerated

Barringer Meteor Crater and Its Environmental Effects. Forty-nine thousand years ago, a large 30 to 50 meter diameter iron asteroid impacted the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona. The resulting massive explosion excavated 175 million tons of rock, forming a crater nearly a mile wide and 570 feet deep.
idk man if a 30-50 meter size asteroid hits and does that. have you ever seen it? i been there before its insane. 30-50 meters is nothing compared to 1/3 of a mile. lol

my mistake i miscalculated what you said. but does it really matter lol

NASA has to pitch these wild make believe stories to justify their multi billion dollar budget.

Kinda funny that America is willing to spend more money and effort on space than preserving our own environment.

they would shoot a rocket at it, it would still be devastating raining smaller asteroids down onto earth but it would be much better then nuclear winter.
