Netflix paying Warner Media $100 million in 2019 to stream 'Friends'

image

*The company will pay around $100 million to continue licensing the program from its owner, WarnerMedia, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details of the deal.

That’s a significant jump from the $30 million a year that Netflix had paid previously to stream the show. But the new amount reflects the thirst for content in the streaming age.*

If Netflix was real G's they would have had Seinfeld instead of Hulu and not have to settle for this terribly unfunny show.

but its not though. i know people talk sh!t about friends but it was in the top 10 watched show all of the 10 years that it was on. It had fifth most-watched series finale in television history when it happened

when it comes to sitcoms seinfeld and friends can ask for this kind of money and somebody is going to pay it

it took netflix a week to come to this deal when everybody found out that friends was going to be taken off. you might not like the sh!t but millions of others do

The actors in those shows don't have to work another job for life. Big bang theory has like a bunch of cast mates making near or over 1million an episode and it's heading into its last season.

Seinfeld, haha. That women is doing Veep cause she wants to. Her family is rich, Seinfeld made her own money, and she's on Veep just having fun.

They keep it bc it's an important comfort show for white female subscribers.

But I'm curious to know when too much is too much.

Obviously they deemed retaining Friends to be necessary.

What about The Office though? Will that also cost them another 100m? And at what point does NBC finally remove it (if ever)?

Netflix is gonna have to make a lot of costly decisions the next few years as every network and their grandmom is gonna have their own streaming service.

thats why they are trying to make as much content that they own(not just produce) as possible. Whoever cuts a long-term deal with a couple of networks is going to win out. Most of the networks are not going to be able to have their own streaming service and have it be successful.

It’s pretty much down to Netflix, Amazon, and Disney and Disney might have the upper hand if you add Hulu to this(once the Fox deal officially goes through)

They keep speculating that Apple is going to get involved but YouTube just tapped out on their service or at least redoing it

They make billions and gaining around 15 million subscribers a year if not more, price for the service has been steadily increasing, as well as their own content. Reinvesting in your business is what you do to stay on top, once other companies open their own services people arent going to want to have 10 different streaming subscriptions I think Netflix will always have a strong market share.

Eventually they will start capping what they will pay but they crushing the game right now and have excess funds to keep the subscribers happy.
