My review of VENOM

image

By now you’ve seen the ads. By now you’ve probably read the online buzz. By now you’ve probably decided if you’re gonna spend your precious time & money on Sony’s VENOM. If you’re still on the fence maybe this review will help cement your decision.

Having watched movies as long as I have you can somehow tell from the marketing things like the story structure and overall quality of the end product. With a genre like this it becomes even more easy to predict. The marketing for Venom has pretty much laid out everything you need to know about the movie. There are hardly any surprises. So if you’re looking for path breaking storytelling or anything that even remotely tries, this isn’t it. Even action aficionado’s will find the action passable at best.

Other than current special effects, VENOM seems like a product of a bygone era. Like greedy studio heads at Sony unearthed a late 90s script and ran with it especially after reinvigorating their cashcow franchise (i.e. Spider-man Homecoming). Everything about this is painfully dated. From the love angle, the formulaic villain to the all too familiar action.

Yet I’d like to see a sequel. Why? Two words - Tom Hardy.

Like many I wasn’t sold on his Eddie Brock from the trailers and to be honest I still don’t buy the journalist side. Maybe if he was a small time writer for a thrashy blog/tabloid or someone hungry to prove himself. You’d think that after being kicked out of New York for his journalistic misdeeds he’d be struggling to get back on his feet. Nope. He pretty much works for a big news firm (judging from the big a*s skyscraper they’re based in) and seems to be doing a-okay. Yet all of his actions seriously make us doubt his journalistic abilities.

To make matters worse the character has no arc. He ends the movie the way he started just with new abilities. Besides all the movies shortcomings this is perhaps the most wasted opportunity. All this is no fault of the actors. He’s paid to act and act he does. Once the symbiote latches on the fun kicks in. Hardy’s interaction with Venom is what makes one forgive the dullest first hour in recent memory and forget how archaic all of this feels.

Give the man a better director and a script from the 2010’s at least and let him unleash the true potential of this character in the sequel. Than maybe Sony will have the Spiderverse they’re so desperate to kick start.

this movie just reeks of "Sony thinks a superhero movie should have x y and z so we're going to rework this script until it fits every generic guideline imaginable". i cant imagine ruben fleischer and tom hardy joining a project if its truly this devoid of imagination or originality

U should add an option "I'm gonna watch it...for free". Still excited to see how Tom does in the roll he never really disappoints. But I'm definitely not paying to see it especially after that review. I very rarely listen to critics and usually disagree with them and I always like to check sh*t out myself. Now I can go in with low Hope's and might possibly be amazed hahah

This review is exactly what I expected.

Guy stumples on power
Rejects the power
Embraces the power

Go from bad to good yadda yadda yadda

I want to support Tom Hardy because I think he’s one of the real bad a*ses even though Even Stevens broke his nose

Any comic book series that have an R rating or Mature audience on the cover but got adapted as a pg-13 film is never good news nor worth the time to check out.

The CGI and Tom Hardy’s acting from the trailer is enough for me to not want to see it.
