HELLBOY bombs With A Dismal $12 Million Opening Weekend; SHAZAM! Holds #1 Spot With $25M

image

Lionsgate and director Neil Marshall's Hellboy failed to get off the starting blocks this weekend, taking in a paltry $12 million at the domestic box office.

The R-rated reboot was pretty much torn to shreds by critics (see below) and earned a dreaded C CinemaScore from audiences, which no doubt contributed to the movie's disappointing performance. Though some seem to feel that Hellboy isn't quite as bad as the critical consensus suggests, we can probably write this one off as a major misstep and a wasted opportunity to relaunch a franchise.

Better news for Warner Bros., as David F. Sandberg's Shazam! easily maintained its hold on the No. 1 spot with $25.1 million. Its 10-day domestic total now sits at $94.9 million.

Tell us, have you seen Hellboy? Do you intend to? Drop us a comment down below, and check out some of the reviews. They're not all bad!

Why do they keep trying to push this character? I've never met anyone that had any interest in it.

the only difference between hellboy and shazaam, is that one sh*t movie have a comic book brand attached to it, while the other sh*t movie doesn't.

Try and find a single Black person in the first two movies.

Even amongst the thousands of extras.

I can't find a single one. You cannot tell me that sh*t is not deliberate. fu*k Hellboy.

I can't believe that nobody seems to have noticed how they deliberately excluded any Black people whatsoever from being on set of the first two films.

It's really outrageous, but I just don't think folks ever noticed.

Hellboy was a big title back in the 90s.

I was big into comics, and I thought the creator (Mike Mignola) did decent art. He had a crossover once with my favorite dude (Erik Larsen).

But watching the movies, that brand is obviously on some racist sh*t. That has to come down from the top. No Black folks at all in those movies, and you can't tell me they don't know it.

Itís doing decent. Should end with $300+ mil globally. Same ballpark as lesser known characters like Ant-Man. If DC plays their cards right with these characters, namely either a Black Adam solo or my personally preferred option of a rumoured villain role in The suicide Squad, and jump to a Marvel Family movie I think the character could see a big bump in numbers by the time a sequel drops.

Doesnít matter... it also cost $50M less than Ant-Man and is already profitable for the studio. It also is more well received than either Ant-Man movie and will probably do great with DVD sales and streams.

Itís not a fair comparison. Sure both characters are hardly known outside of comic book fans but Marvel already had a massive devoted movie going fan base. Marvel also uses their bigger movies to help build a buzz for their small movies, case in point AoU/Ant-Man, IW/Captain Marvel/Endgame. Shazam shares very little story threads with the rest of the DC movies.

Personally, Iíd prefer DC to have their own voice instead of aping Marvel. Hopefully the second wave of movies (Birds of Prey, The suicide Squad) help set it apart. Otherwise, even I may grow tired of these movies.

100% DC's fault for focusing exclusively on Batman/Superman since '78

That # isnít gonna matter to the studio. They hit $180M off this movie WW, theyíre good. Theyíre not keeping score on these the same way fans do, because theyíre actually the ones making money off it.

Theyíve already hired the screenwriter back for a sequel.

First things first this is a AMCAList review I did not pay full price and I saw it in a very good and comfortable theater. Optimal circumstances with little effort or money involved. Just like I'd be pissed if I pay a restaurant for filet mignon and they serve me Applebee's, I'd probably have a sh*tty attitude about this movie if I had paid the ridiculous price of Dolby cinema in NYC.

It's Constantine with Lord of the Rings makeup. I like the idea and I see why they would make it a movie. They should have had more bad guys like the boogiewoman. if they had just put their twist on a couple more American legends just like that it would have at least got better reviews

But probably made the same money

I enjoyed the boogiewoman and the Giants. The chick punching out souls was a boring character to me. The special effects for her spiritual gift looked like a PlayStation 2 video game.

Her backstory was a plus though. The whole baby thing. See I like when movies take stuff we know of (like the fairies) and give them a twist. In captain hook, the fairy is a little angel. Fairies are boring. But in this movie they make something familiar interesting.

That's why I compare it to Constantine. Not just the hell part but the world-building of legends we know. Except instead of the corny Tom Cruise Mummy way, HB should pick legends you were actually afraid of as a kid. Like yo he's from hell, the last place anybody wants to be, so these characters better be the last motherfu*kers anybody wants to see point blank period. Ergo the boogie bi*ch. Eating that soup. sh*t was disgusting. And then when he found out how she makes it (
[spoiler - click to view]

). Hooooly sh*t. That was one of the few encounters of this joint worth seeing.

Bottom line is they have 1000 characters they didn't even create that they could use. Like the Slenderman. Gargoyles or some sh*t. Of course the devil himself. Blah blah

Yeah this is basically Constantine on some dirty acid

7/10. Could have been a strong 8 with a better bad guy. That chick is not a good bad guy.
