Netflix's Market Value Dropped $8 Billion After the Disney Plus Announcement

Netflix Inc. lost as much as $8 billion in market capitalization in a few minutes of trading on Walt Disney Co.’s news of its upcoming — and cheaper — rival streaming service.

Disney unveiled details of the service on Thursday after the close, saying it would launch Nov. 12 at a price of $7 a month or $70 a year. That undercuts Netflix, whose most popular U.S. plan costs about $11 a month.

Netflix shares fell as much as 5 percent to $349.36 shortly after the open in New York Friday, sending its market as low as $152.5 billion.

Analysts have been sanguine about Netflix’s rising subscription prices, which haven’t seriously dented its 60 million-strong U.S. customer base. Still, the company has rarely faced a challenge like the deep-pocketed Disney, which is willing to lose money for years on Disney+ as it moves to grab market share.

Disney went the opposite way. Its shares jumped to a record high, adding as much as $25 billion in market value, for a total of about $235 billion.

The entertainment giant presented Disney+ on a sound stage used to make the original “Mary Poppins,” delivering an Apple-style presentation of the online product. The service will live or die based on its content — and that’s where Disney made a big statement. Disney+ will feature an arsenal of kid-friendly programming, including 13 classic animated movies, 21 Pixar features, original series, and material from its Marvel and Star Wars franchises.

Like has been said, all these streaming services are pushing ppl back to piracy. Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, CBS All access, DC Universe, Disney+, ESPN+..not including the cable services like Sling and Directv Now. You gotta pay out the a*s or do without watching shows you are interested in b/c they are all over the place....Unless you have other means. 1080p/4K Disney rips are gonna be jumping in due time

You can cancel anytime.

Just do a month whenever you feel.

If you do the yearly the cost is around only $5.83 a month.

$5-$7 for a month of all the Disney classics, films, tv shows, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, 21st century fox movies and shows.

Then on top of that all the new content they're creating just for the service.

I mean who else is charging that cheap ? but I guess any and every service is too much to somebody out there. It's all subjective but compared to the other services there's nothing else that cheap for the quality.

Go split with your boys. $7 divided by 4 people is like $1.75 a month.

BIGFAX. Disney is gonna have to come up with something incredible for me to add their service. I ain’t got no kids. I’m a casual marvel / Star Wars fan and have no problem going to the theater for the major releases. And Disney doesn’t use profanity so they have less range than the other services.

Disney cool, but I truly don’t give a sh*t about most of the stuff they got to offered. With the exception of the Simpsons, and I can’t see myself paying $7 for their Disney kids catalogue

Cuz they are similar products

So investors pull their money off the old thing and put money into the new thing

It should go back

I definitely think Disney a good investment

But Netflix will easily survive this they’ve cemented their place

Theirs a guy who wants them to buy Sony studio to be more competitive
