BLACK PANTHER Chadwick Boseman Questions The Timing Of Scorseseís Marvel Comments

Speaking to BBC radio, Boseman was asked about the whole debate over whether or not superhero films are ďcinemaĒ or if theyíre just glorified ďtheme park rides.Ē And as the star of Marvel Studiosí first Best Picture Oscar-nominated film, not only does the actor defend his film but gives a couple of reasons why he thinks Scorsese is speaking out.

The first argument is that the timing of this discussion is awfully important to consider.

ďI have to respect his opinion because heís a genius at what he does. At the same time youíve got to think about when heís saying it,Ē said Boseman. ďHeís saying it when heís possibly campaigning for an award.Ē

He continued, ďHeís saying it at a time when heís making a Netflix movie, so thatís how eyes get on his film and itís not going to be in the cinemas. Itís not going to be seen the best way. So, he is speaking to the time period. He is speaking also to his advantageÖI did the first, you know, the superhero movie that was nominated for a [Best Picture] Oscar. Iím secure in that.Ē

This is a comment that probably hits close to home for Scorsese. Now, it doesnít appear that the filmmaker is somehow trying to knock other films down to prop up his own, but it is interesting that in a world where Netflix films arenít seemingly given a fair shake come awards time, Scorsese is trying to take down other films for not being ďcinema.Ē Some have said (Steven Spielberg included) that Netflix films are glorified TV movies.

But for his second argument, Boseman brings up the fact that ďBlack PantherĒ had a lot of the qualifications that Scorsese has been using for real cinema. Itís just that the filmmaker isnít the target audience.

ďThe mystery that Scorsese is talking about, itís in ĎBlack Panther.í And I think he funny thing about it is if he saw ĎBlack Panther,í he didnít get that. He didnít get that there was this feeling of being unsure. There was this feeling of not knowing what was gonna happy that Black people feel. Cause we never had a superhero like this before.

He added, ďWe thought that they, you know, white people will k*ll us off. So itís a possibility that we could be gone. So we felt that angst, we felt that thing that you would feel from cinema when we watched it. Maybe Scorsese didnít get that when he watched it. Thatís cultural. Maybe itís generational. I donít know, but Iím secure in what we did, you know?Ē

What an uninformed comment from him the movie will be in theatres and is in select theatres right now. In reality the comments are more likely aimed towards the people who had to lobby and cry about Black Panther being nominated for best picture when it wasn't even close to being worthy of it.

I respect chad as an Actor, but martin had absolutely nothing to gain from criticizing the most popular movie genre ...if anything it probably burned a few bridges so I dont think calling it "convenient" is the right word

Martin doesn't need clout, and what he said wasn't wrong either

It came up because a random reporter asked him about it at a press junket for The Irishman. Not hard to figure out.

Yeah it is true, not a coincidence that he started saying all this stuff around the time his new project The Irishman is getting ready to come out

Trying to Bash Superhero movies because they're dominating the Box Office comes off as very petty and a bit Jealous

The Man is Genius no doubt

People keep trying to over-analyze a guy who is just mad his films don't get the same love as "Marvel" films get.

Now you got corny internet trolls who all of sudden think Marvel films are trash theme park attractions because Scorsese saids so, but for the past 11 years were sucking MCU off as the best thing coming

Some of you are so lame

Nah itís the DC fanboys who think somehow Martin is sh*tting on MCU films but loving films like suicide Squad and Aquaman.

Chad has a point. Martin has an agenda behind his words. Why sh*t on MCU now?

As old as Martin is, I doubt he gives one flying fu*k about a clout and especially with the resume he got.

On the other hand, Martin’s right. Movies like Black Panther or from this genre are pretty much nothing but some amusement park films. Just because they sell, it doesn’t mean they are great at all or are even deserving of an Oscar, and Black Panther is not that special.

It was great that it broke that many records, and it was even better that it shutdown a lot of people who thought it was going to flop. However, did it deserve an Oscar? Hell no. That’s where that reality check needs to come on, because a lot of people are creating a reality that doesn’t exist.

It's combination of Internet trolls, stans (from both sides), what have you man. It's not just DC fanboys being loud and obnoxious.

Chadwick Boseman isn't saying anything new, then what anybody else has said about Scorsese comments over a month ago.

He just mad about the love and mainly the money and accolades that Marvel films are making versus his joints.

He ain't slick and anybody with a brain can see that.

Martin and Frank both put their feet in their mouths with the criticism. Sad part is its probably because their films have never been as successful box office hits like the mcu. Its understandable at their age though.
