Vitamin and mineral supplements won't help you live longer, could cause harm, study says

Getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals can lower your risk of an early death, but they should come from food instead of supplements, a study published Tuesday suggests.

Researchers from Tufts University say they found no a*sociation between the use of dietary supplements and a lower risk of death.

The study analyzed data from a larger health and nutrition survey conducted from 1999 to 2010. More than 30,000 participants ages 20 and older answered questions about dietary supplement use.

Results showed people who got adequate amounts of vitamin K and magnesium lowered their risk of early death, and those who got enough vitamin A, vitamin K and zinc had a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Those benefits were earned only when those nutrients came from food, not supplements.

"While supplement use contributes to an increased level of total nutrient intake, there are beneficial a*sociations with nutrients from foods that aren't seen with supplements," said Fang Fang Zhang, an author on the study and a*sociate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, in a statement.

The research was published in the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

The study found excess intake of calcium through supplements was a*sociated with a higher risk of death from cancer. Researchers say there was no link between cancer risk and calcium intake from food.

Several studies have called into question the need for supplements and whether they actually improve overall health.

Last year, a study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American College of Cardiology found vitamin and mineral supplements offered no measurable health benefits to prevent cardiovascular disease.

A study in 2017 warned that men taking too much vitamin B could double their risk of developing lung cancer.

Folks dont wanna accept the truth. Yeah good, natural based vitamin supplements can have their place. But they only work to a certain extent. Plus people need to understand that all the extra crap like magnesim stearate, titanium dioxide, and the bunch of the other preservatives and additives they put in vitamin supplements will go straight to your liver, etc.

Most vitamin c supplements arent even real vitamin c. Its just synthetic, isolated ascorbic acid without all the extra co factors real vitamin c has. Not to mention, alot of it gets oxidized while on the shelf.

Dont even get me started on fish oil pills. Alot of em are rancid and make you sicker. And the omega 3 doesnt absorb as well as people think. You get better results from eating wild caught Alaskan salmon 2-3 times a week vs gulping down fish oil pills everyday.

You can also knock your electrolytes and other minerals out of balance by talking isolated vitamins. Calcium supplements are known for causing heart attacks, isolated calcium deposite, etc.

There are cofactors and other things you get in food that allow for better nutrient absorption that you wont get from supplements. Alot of supplements can cause all kinds of free radicals, etc to accumulate in the body.

Just eat good food!

Your body understands how to process whole foods, not hyper-concentrated nutrient extracts. People need to make sure they eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, mostly vegetables, and they won't have to supplement. And you can still have an occasional burger or pizza or whatever else but the base should be plants.

Exactly! The body knows. We've been taught to think we need mega amounts of a certain mineral and its just no true. Taking mega doses of a certain mineral; the body will just dump the bulk of it because it doesn't know how to fully utilize it. Or it can get store in places it shouldn't be. Now maybe someone with a severe deficiency can get away with taking huge doses. Who knows. However; it is a risk. Just like when people gulp down fish oil pills. Its very concentrated so the oil/fat rushes to your bloodstream(bad) unlike the fat/oil in whole fish which gets stored in the right ratios and in the right place. Also most fish oil pills on the market have more epa than dha which is the complete opposite of how epa/dha ratios are found in fish. Fish have more dha than epa. Fish oil pills are also linked to anxiety.

So basically get most of your nutrients from food? Pointless study, they're called supplements for a reason, they're not meant to be a main source
