Spike Lee On His Issue With 'Soul Man' (1986) | The d*ck Cavett Show

starts at 4:16

Film Director Spike Lee outlines his issue with the 1986 movie 'Soul Man' in which a white actor depicts a black person with the use of 'black face'

this was the trailer to the other movie

Rae Dawn Chong who played the main character's love interest is apparently still pissed off that Spike Lee basically sabotaged the film and made it seem like it was something that black people shouldn't see and demeaning.

I saw it as a kid.

The premise was mad offensive but it really poked fun at white folks passive/aggressive racism. I can see how people would be offended when C. Thomas Howell was doing his black impersonations in black face.

Other blacks believing C Thomas was black not being realistic was a good point but for the sake of the movie you have to suspend disbelief.

RDC did kind of play the magical negro role. The understanding forgiving black person who helps the misguided mayo man grow a conscience and do the right thing.

I feel like I've seen this movie before but I'd have to see it as an adult.
