How Microsoft Internet Explorer Almost Became The Default Web Browser

CNBC
Published on Sep 6, 2019

In 1995, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates published a memo entitled "The Internet Tidal Wave." Gates outlined seven areas where Microsoft could increase its focus on internet features, including a web browser. The next year Microsoft launched its Internet Explorer web browser. Microsoft faced an antitrust lawsuit by the Department of Justice in 1998 during the height of the Browser Wars. Its Internet Explorer was quickly becoming the go-to web browser for the masses, but the U.S. government argued it stifled competition.

IE used to be solid. I honestly think Microsoft just stopped caring to make improvements and crossover because the competition was becoming overwhelming. They already had their hands in other projects anyway. Firefox took the browser throne imo. Chrome is overrated and underwhelming. Opera is ok.

I do web development and my company still makes sites that support IE11.. it's a pain in the a*s to work with sometimes because it doesn't allow for a lot of the special effects that you can do on a modern web browser like Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari.

ummm, i got my first computer in 1998, netscape was free, also it wasnt incredibly difficult to install

it was difficult, or impossible to uninstall internet explorer, because it literally was built into windows explorer by the 3rd update to windows 95 if i remember correctly, and definitely built into windows 98

We still use IE at work. It's pretty much the "ol reliable". Mostly everyone is familiar with it.

I remember dial up I would be in the middle of playing a game or downloading something and my mom would need to use the phone so I would have to disconnect so she could use it

If I ever had to use dial up again I wouldn't even be on the internet unless it was for an emergency. I'd rather keep a fu*king phonebook in my backpack
