Jan 14 - 4 Homeless Moms Squatting in Vacant House in Oakland Evicted by Armed Deputies

Four homeless women ordered by a judge last week to leave a vacant house they illegally occupied in Oakland were evicted before dawn Tuesday by heavily armed sheriff’s deputies in a case that highlighted California’s severe housing shortage and growing numbers of homeless people.

Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies, some dressed in military-style fatigues, escorted the women from the home and bound their hands with plastic ties as dozens of community activists on the sidewalk chanted “Let the moms go! Let the moms go!” and recorded the chaotic scene with their cell phones. Video showed one deputy slamming a battering ram against the house’s front door.

“They came in like an Army for mothers and babies,” Dominique Walker, one of the mothers, told reporters. “We have the right to housing. This is just the beginning.”

The women and their children moved into the three-bedroom house in November, partly to protest the methods of speculators who they have claimed snap up distressed homes and leave them empty despite California’s severe housing shortage and growing numbers of homeless people.

Federal officials said last month that an uptick in the country’s homeless population was driven entirely by a 16% increase in California, where the median sales price of a home is $500,000 and is even higher in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Patrick McKinney ruled last Friday the women did not have the right to stay and had to leave within five days. McKinney had previously issued a tentative ruling in favor of Wedgewood Inc., the real estate investment group that bought the Oakland property at a foreclosure auction last year.

Still, McKinney allowed lawyers for Walker, and her recently formed collective, Moms 4 Housing, to make their case. They argued that housing is a right and that the court must give the women the right to possess the house, especially because it sat vacant for so long and because the alternative would be to send the women to live on the streets.

Wedgewood in a statement it was pleased “the illegal occupation of its Oakland home has ended peacefully.”

Moms 4 Housing claimed on its Twitter account that two of the four women who had been inside the home were arrested.

“We’ve built a movement of thousands of Oaklanders who showed up at a moments notice to reject police violence and advocate for homes for families,” the group said after the eviction. “This isn’t over, and it won’t be over until everyone in the Oakland community has a safe and dignified place to live.”

Sheriffs don't play once they get that eviction notice.

I bought a few houses through foreclosure auctions. You pretty much have to go through the eviction process immediately. Even if you don't want the people living there to leave right away. It helps protect your claim on the property. If you don't, you are giving any squatters a legal argument that they can stay there.

I've had instances where the Sheriffs bring them out in handcuffs and soon as the Sheriffs leave I made a deal with them so they could stay an extra month to get their stuff out and find another place. It makes less work for me and I don't have to clean out all their sh*t they left behind. I also hook them up with this lawyer I know that can help them get the surplus funds they are owed from the auction (if there are any) to help them get a new place. I know one couple got 35k and they told me that was more than what they had paid into the house.

It is complicated.

This house was vacant because there was a legal claim on the house. First by the bank during the foreclosure process. The judgement during that was the house would go up for auction. Once someone won the auction, they had a legal claim on the house.

An abandoned house is where the homeowner walks away from the property. They stop paying property taxes on it and the county may put a lien on it. If the person that owns the property is found to still be living on it they can be "evicted" from it for the taxes owed. Anybody that is not responsible for the taxes can live on the property and not be fu*ked with.

There's a thin line there. Local police will often kick people off abandoned property no matter what. Since people don't know the laws and the police carry guns, they usually follow the cop's orders to leave.

For every 1 homeless person in Oakland their are 4 vacant homes. The vast majority of homes are owned by corporations not individual folks renting out homes. This particular home sat empty for 2yrs.

Surprised the city of Oakland, churches, naacp or the mayor didn’t step up to find these women affordable or subsidized housing. It’s no reason it should have even come this with the amount publicity and resources being used to make a legal case for these women to reside at the residence.

California’s severe housing shortage
California born and raised here... they make it sound like homeless people are homeless because they can’t afford rent. If you pay close attention, MOST of these people are mentally ill, addicts, or are in and out of prison. It’s not a housing issue. These people are sick and/or have severe issues.

They had full swat teams, trucks, even helicopters. All of that tax payer money they used could’ve went towards purchasing them a small home.

Women with children are all entitled to TANF an average of $397/mo this isn't counting SNAP/WIC/Housing a*sistance and Child-Support in many cases and other resources such as emergency shelter for families, DV victims etc.

4 women "trying to survive" can't put their $397/mo+ and rent a 2br apartment but would rather squat in an abandoned property potentially putting their children at risk? FOH.

In Oakland? Trying to rent property? Stfu not to mention the buildings are owned by companies trying to hoard them until they cash out while pricing the natives out. Lame a*s n*ggas like you always got something to say when its poor and black ppl being screwed over but wouldn't know the first thing about trying to survive

Oakland and The Bay as a whole ain't what it used to be. Priced everybody out. 2001-2009 Bay Area woulda been lined up outside the home taking a stand to gentrification. But, me being a current bay area resident, this sh*t looking like the spark that's going to get sh*t going. Story been in the news for months now. Happy to see it on Boxden. Gentrification isn't right.
