Jan 14 - Apple Reignites Privacy Battle, Refuses To Unlock Phones

visit this link Apple has reignited a privacy battle with the Trump administration by declining to unlock a mass shooter's iPhones

Attorney General William Barr reignited a feud between Apple and the US government over its refusal to let officials access encrypted data on iPhones.

He said Apple wasn't doing enough to help the FBI access two phones used by Mohammed Alshamrani, the Saudi officer who opened fire in December on a naval base in Pensacola, Florida.

Barr said the FBI needed encrypted information from Alshamrani's iPhones to properly investigate the shooting, which officials on Monday declared was an act of terrorism.

Apple said it had helped as much as it could but would never code a "backdoor" to allow law enforcement access to users' encrypted information.

The argument is effectively a replay of a 2015 struggle between Apple and the Obama administration, which wanted to access a cellphone after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.

Apple has said such backdoors would make all users' phones vulnerable to bad actors.

the govt can take your private info anytime they want

but when you ask them a simple question about aliens or who did 9/11, it's

they're just gonna head these phones over to an Israeli company to unlock it anyway but privacy in America is about as dead as the founding fathers. This should concern people.

Apple bows to China, uses sweatshops, stifles competition and refuses to pay taxes like American workers do for starters

if two murderers sit down at a table and talk, they're not murdering anyone, but they are still murderers

both sides are claiming the moral high ground while neither have a leg to stand on

What thing in this situation makes Apple greedy?

Just because they have no morals high ground doesn’t mean they are automatically greedy in this.

Every publicly traded company is greedy by necessity. There is no tolerance for quarterly earnings falling below expectations. They will maximize margins at the cost of quality, ethics, reputation...anything and everything. And then the verbal gymnastics are used to rinse it all.

This. I pity those that think that because it's encrypted, it's safe. Or, that the govt is looking out for our best interests

Don't believe it. They're willingly gonna unlock the phone and forensics has software to unlock any and all phones.

They only do this to save face. They have billions, best believe they hand over the tools as long as they can say they didn't have a hand in it.

All this is BS.

Wtf does that have to do with putting in a backdoor for encryption, if they bowed to china, they'll still add the backdoor so china can spy on us
