Jun 4 - L.A. officials stunned as homeless population jumps by 12 percent in just one year

Los Angles officials are heartbroken over the increases in homelessness after a massive effort to combat it, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Millions were poured into initiatives to decrease the homelessness in the city. However, officials saw that homeless spiked by 12 percent over the last year.

“At this point of unprecedented wealth in the county of Los Angeles, we are equally confronted with unprecedented poverty manifesting itself in the form of homelessness,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas told The Times.

“This work has never been for the faint of heart, and we cannot let a set of difficult numbers discourage us, or weaken our resolve,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

While efforts were made to decrease homelessness, the number of people facing poverty outpaced the city’s efforts.

“Last year’s count, we felt we were trimming in a way that would suggest we were getting our arms around this,” Ridley-Thomas added. “And yet this year we

The report also notes that the lack of affordable housing is contributing to the issue.

“If we don’t change the fundamentals of housing affordability, this is going to be a very long road,” Peter Lynn, executive director of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority said in a briefing with The Times. “If we don’t get ahead of affordability, we’re going to be very hard pressed to get ahead of homelessness.”

This is partly due to a large percentage of illegal immigrants not paying taxes on their income, which the majority of is sent back to their families in foreign countries. Coupled with all the free government programs that provide them with housing, health care and plethora of social services which aren’t available to US citizens.

Also, the Chinese Government funded conglomerates that own a vast amount of rental properties which is a driving force behind the astronomical rise in California rent prices.

Sadly It’s only going to get worse as more and more automation gets implemented taking away an already scarce amount of jobs.

San Francisco is getting pretty bad too.... Go on aa lil further than downtown/financial area and you'll see tents on streets, homeless peops on floors, knocks and fiends/crackheads are entering the bart station soon.

It will only get worse in my opinion. Not sure what can be done.

I respect you on here, but you gotta fully understand the nuances of this issue in LA. I can't speak on SF or other places, but Skid Row/homelessness thrives in large part because of a system that creates the problem that it solves.

Much of these nonprofit organizations that serve Skid Row make their money from this problem. From the Federal/County subsidies that they receive, as well as other benefits, there is little incentive to "solve" homelessness. Additionally, they are paid for every body...every name they can enter on an intake form, every "service" delivered, is a paycheck. Not to mention, some of these nonprofit affordable housing developers take advantage of incentives meant to curb the shortage of affordable housing. Much like how developers are taking advantage of Opportunity Zones currently. In short, homelessness is profitable.

We can even talk about how in a City that's ~7% black with one of the largest populations of homeless, a great majority of them are black. We've seen this before.

Soooo black and brown bodies fuel the prison industrial complex. And in LA, a region with one of the wealthiest economies in the world, homeless black and brown bodies are used by real estate development companies posing as nonprofits and nonprofits run by for-profit minded individuals for money. We see once again how human capital is exploited for financial gain. These people look like you and I...

The fact that some people end up homeless due to their own negligence is negligible. To make empty solutions like yours is not productive nor innovative. And that type of thinking will never inspire anything close to a solution.

Homelessness at these levels should be looked at as a symptom. Unless the overall well-being of humans doesn't much concern you. And that's fine and understandable.

I just find it ludicrous. Blacks are disproportionately locked up more than any other group in the US. Would you suggest that they work themselves out of systemic racism?

Suggesting that the only reason people are homeless or poor is because of their own failure is a slippery slope. It is the perfect fodder for a*signing a particular "dysfunction" towards a group of people, insisting that they are what they are because it's just a characteristic of those people. This is how problems get swept under the rug and any claim speaking against it are dismissed. We've also seen that before.

Crack epidemic in the 80s: Well, that's just what they do.

Opioid crisis today: Oh my God, we must save our children.

Word to @

I have no faith in these census numbers being anywhere near accurate. ~ first thought that came to mind when the news reported a "12%" rise in the homeless demographic.

Its crazy:

Nyc: Only 5% of the homeless are unsheltered.

Los Angeles: 75% of the homeless are unsheltered.

That's the problem. Nyc has more homeless but you dont see them outside like how you do in LA.

Plus, you can eat like a king as a bum in Nyc. Plenty of food spots and the food definitely isn't sh*tty either. Especially in Harlem. I know because I deliver there.

Stop electing democrats.

Problem solved.

For example, California is a fu*king disgrace. Let's have a look at the executive branch:

Gavin Newsome (D)
Governor
Eleni Kounalakis (D)
Lieutenant Governor
Alex Padilla (D)
Secretary of State
Xavier Becerra (D)
Attorney General
Fiona Ma (D)
State Treasurer
Betty Yee (D)
State Controller
Tony Thurmond (D)
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
Ricardo Lara (D)
Insurance Commissioner

combined IQ of those elected officials: 78.

and that's just a small portion of the Democrats running that state. Check out other states and you'll notice a very clear pattern.

Basically anarchism as social policy.

Homeless is a symptom of lack of affordable housing and wage growth. If a full time job can't provide for housing then the homeless population will consistently grow as a result. Living wages and more housing would wipe out much of homelessness. If society won't allow a living wage then there should be taxes paid to produce the same benefits.

Or just provide nearly free guaranteed housing.

Guaranteed houses sounds like socialism

If you get priced out of where you live move someplace cheaper don’t pitch a tent in front of someone else home

So what if it does. If a person can't afford where they live they probably can't afford to move. So homeless. Anarchy and social darwinism are good concepts for movies like the Hunger Games, not real policy unless you want chaos.

Plenty of US cities have programs the offer homeless one way tickets to any of the 50 states
