New ‘reverse’ solar panels generate electricity from the NIGHT sky – and could turn ‘vastness of universe’ into energy source

YOU could soon slash your energy bills by powering your home using nothing but the night sky.

Scientists claim to have invented a new source of renewable energy that uses the "coldness of the universe" to generate electricity.

"You could soon power your house using the night sky"

Using a special conductor pointed at the sky, the gadget harvests energy from the temperature difference between Earth and the freezing vastness of deep space.

Unlike solar panels, the tech would work around the clock and regardless of the weather, say an international team of scientists.

They showed that the device has potential, though it'll be a fair few years before it's powerful enough to run your telly.

It works by sitting on Earth and facing space, which has frigid temperatures.

"The experimental device works a bit like a solar panel"

An outflow of heat energy passes through the gadget towards the sky in the form of infrared radiation.

The reverse panel harvests this radiation and converts it into electricity, much like a solar cell absorbs solar radiation as it passes from the Sun to our planet.

The gadget could revolutionise how we power our homes by generating electricity like solar cells but with the ability to power electronics at night.

"The vastness of the Universe is a thermodynamic resource," said team member Dr Shanhui Fan, from Stanford University in California.

"There is really this very beautiful symmetry between harvesting incoming radiation and harvesting outgoing radiation."

It's just a proof of concept for now, but early tests showed the device can produce a tiny 64 nanowatts of power per square metre.

For comparison, the average solar panel churns out a thousand million times more power than this, so there's a long way to go yet.

But as material tech advances, we could see the system powering our homes in the near future.

We’re going to need to transition to clean energy sources, look at the sh*t going on in California. I doubt it will happen cause the only way it becomes a reality is if the power grid is nationalized.
