We need everyone to respond to a census regardless of citizenship. Some people may be afraid of ICE if they answer truthfully, for example.

From an article I read...

“...Many recipients won't respond to the census if a citizenship question is included, these groups have said, leading to undercounts – which, they said, is the goal of the Trump administration.

Counting fewer minorities, they said, will make it easier for Republicans to draw congressional districts to their liking...”

This isn’t a good argument. I’ve seen everyone say this , but it makes absolutely no sense. If someone is here illegally they are most likely already lying. Why wouldn’t they keep lying ? The census doesn’t ask for your ID and they don’t even share the information . They don’t confirm anything . Whatever you put is what you put. The last time I filled the census out I don’t even think I put my real name or race.

I still donít get whatís the issue with the question.
The less people that fill it out, the less money goes to those districts for whatever its going there for. Less schools/hospitals getting funding.

Plus if you lie on the census you can be charged. So it could be a way to round up people. There a bunch of sh*t that could go extremely wrong with this question.

Also it'll make it easier for Republicans to continue gerrymandering.
Remember, the guy who became the poster boy for coming up with the idea/how to implement gerrymandering had this idea so they can go even further then just gerrymandering

The Supreme court didn't deny Trump. They just said they can't rule on it because theres evidence there that lower courts didn't see yet. Hence why he's gonna do an executive order.

The Supreme Court just ruled recently on gerrymandering. There's nothing wrong with it

If you want to play that game.

Let's switch to popular vote only and see how much Republicans become president from then on.

Remember, in the last 30 years, I believe only 1 Republican won the popular vote.

To be fair the Supreme Court didnít say he was flat out prohibited, just that his reasoning was contrived and a pretext. It was really a lazy opinion in that respect but it may be because Roberts changed his mind at the last second.

Heís got a few more bites at the Apple but itís an uphill battle. Especially considering the tight deadline theyíre up against.

The point being he is circumventing that ruling not by appealing but by executive order.

Trump abandons effort to add citizenship question to census

The Trump administration is dropping its efforts to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census, President Donald Trump will announce Thursday, a senior administration official confirmed.

Instead, he is expected to direct his administration to obtain citizenship data through other means. The move caps more than a week of conflicting messages from the White House over how it would proceed on the issue following a Supreme Court ruling that blocked the Trump administration from including a citizenship question on the decennial questionnaire.

As recently as Thursday morning, Trump had been expected to take executive action directing his officials to add the question to the census, a step that would have come just days after the Justice Department said it would abide by the Supreme Court ruling barring the question.
