2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the Sega Dreamcast—hence the flashbacks!—and to mark the occasion, the team at Archipel, the same guys behind the excellent toco toco series, sat down for a talk with some of the most important developers to ever grace the console, from Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Rez) to Yoot Saito (Seaman).

Super facts.

Might have to be my alarm clock tbh.

It’s crazy how dope and influential this sh*t was in a year and a half.

G.O.A.T system....and I (had) been playing since the Coleco/Intellivision days.

Wasn't long after gamer apathy/stupidity k*lled SEGA that I realized gaming aint for me anymore.

But people didnt want hardcore gaming creativity/purity..they wanted Madden + GTA and a dvd player.

People downplay it now cuz so many of its classics (PSO, Skies, JSR ,Rez,HOtD) got ported/re-released to other consoles after it died...but that lineup was Ambrosia.

First console with internet and a web browser, also the first console in which you could play roms. Including in-game voice chat, downloadable content, and second screen technology as innovations as well.

Ahead of it is time is understatement.

I remember many hours playing Phantasy Star Online and Quake Arena on Dreamcast.

Bring up Dreamcast and the Shenmue fanboys are in route.

Shenmue is fu*king garbage and you weirdos are gonna buy the new one anyway. I cannot wait to talk sh*t in the Shenmue 3 threads.

I pretty much bought every console growing up. Some good games on this system.

Plus it was always nice to be able to, even on dial-up early on download and burn games. Went from needing a boot disc to selfboot. Download a some rar files, extract the iso, pop up Disc Juggler and burn.

The intro sounds were always nice. I still remember the most common ECHELON one...Radix - Happy Sundays:

The only system I wish my brother hadn’t lost is this system. We had so much fun together with the Dreamcast that I legit wish they would release a Dreamcast Mini with all the dope a*s games they had on it.

The Famicom (NES) had net browsing capabilities (Nomura Securities) long before the Dreamcast. But I'll let you cook...

Dreamcast was decent but the Saturn had far more untapped capabilities relative to its release timeline. Shenmue was originally running on Saturn although at a modest framerate.

Always gotta be that one guy.

You know damn well it wasn't the Internet as we know it now. And I believe I said "Internet and web browser in my sentence"

Did the Famicom have a web browser too, as well as capabilities to connect to the web?

imo it depends on when you first played it.. it was groundbreaking for it's time but aged horribly. I remember being in awe of the depth/detail of the open world when it first came out but tried to play the remaster not too long ago after all these years and that sh*t felt ancient

That's why the 16 bit era games age better because of how they were stylized. Retro will never go out of style. Games aiming for realism will always age terribly. Shenmue still holds that charm for me, dated graphics, bad voice acting and all

I played it day 1 when it released on Dreamcast. I fell into the hype from phony reviews back in the Gamepro/EGM days. I can't remember who, but everybody gave it great reviews except in magazine. I shoulda listened to them.

I HATED it when I first played it. The voice acting was trash, the missions were trash, the story was trash, and the side missions were fu*king G-A-R-B-A-G-E. Like who the fu*k finds it fun to go to a video game job, race forklifts, then catch the bus home??

The only thing Shenmue ever had going for it was graphics, and even that was overrated cause Dreamcast had a bunch of games with great graphics like Code Veronica.

Simmer down. One Google search would've sufficed you.
