Jul 6 - Full-time minimum wage workers cannot afford a 2-bedroom rental anywhere in the US

New York, San Francisco and Washington D.C. are often spotlighted for their astronomical housing prices. But a new report finds that itís not just the coasts that are facing an affordability crisis: A full-time worker earning the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour cannot rent an affordable two-bedroom apartment anywhere in the country, where affordable is defined as comprising up to 30% of a renterís budget.

Thatís according to the National Low Income Housing Coalitionís 30th annual Out of Reach report, which finds that a nationwide affordable housing shortage, wage stagnation and racial inequities have left a growing number of people unable to find a place to live thatís reasonably within their budget.

NLIHCís report calculates a ďhousing wageĒ that estimates how much a full-time worker must make in order to afford a fair market rental without spending more than 30% of his or her income. For 2019, the housing wage is $22.96 for a two-bedroom rental, and $18.65 for a one-bedroom.

The means someone earning the federal minimum wage would have to work more than three full-time jobs ó 127 hours per week ó to afford a two-bedroom rental, and 103 hours for a one-bedroom.

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders called the housing situation a ďnational disgrace.Ē

Care to elaborate where you would be without government handouts and welfare?

(I'm serious, btw)

The 1950s

The 1950s

Often looked to as a model era, the 1950s may have been nearly as picture-perfect as Leave it to Beaver seemed to suggest―minimum wage workers could pay rent for a month for less than a week and a half of full-time work―or catch Disney'sCinderella for just over a half-hour of labor.

Minimum wage: $0.75/hour
Gas: $0.27 or 22m
Movie ticket: $0.48 or 38m
Rent: $42 or 56hrs

It's supposed to be though. Corporations got you thinking otherwise.

I do think working minimum wage should at least be able to afford a one bedroom apt. Rent prices are out of control

And it happens in your democratic cities. La, SF, NY, Seattle.

The dems are delusional. Fake articles to make look Trump bad.

Thatís everywhere someone built an apartment complex next to my mom house. I was looking to move closer to her so I Looked into it 2,000 for a 2 bed nothing included it. Crazy you can buy a 300,000 hose and pay 2G instead.

When was the last time you saw a non luxury apartment complex built? I live in the Steele Creek area and that's all they're building.

I really cant recall them building anything affordable except for when the knocked down Double Oaks and built those apts on the corner of LaSalle and Statesville.
That's about it.

You got folks who are getting paid well over minimum wage and still can't afford a 2 bedroom apartment in some cities.

Full time minimum wage here in Orlando, you couldn't even afford a studio, let alone a 2 bedroom apartment.

8.46 which is the FL minimum is 676 dollars every 2 weeks full time. That's 1300 month not included taxes.

Yea, you pretty much homeless here in Orlando unless you got a roommate or a girlfriend bring in loot as well.

the crazy part is (at least in the RVA area) that it's cheaper to make mortgage payments on a townhome than to pay rent for somewhere half the size. Of course the way our Credit game goes, people are stuck paying for these overpriced apartments. Jimmy Mac tried to tell ya...THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH!

Not a coincidence where liberals donít want marriage and think they can handle everything on their own.

How about living with your wife or partner and pay it off together.

How about we give people a living wage so they can afford to live by themselves if they want to. You should not have to have a partner to afforded to the live. Thatís why most people get married and thatís the reason most marriages fail.
