Wow. Some actors just might be out of a job very soon if Hollywood perfects this.

This isn't new though. People have been doing it with video clips with photoshop and gifs since forever.

This deep fakes hysteria is a myth. Anybody who can do a full scene convincingly wouldn't dare waste their time because it takes lots of time, takes some pro skill, and there is no payoff for doing so. Stealing faces for pr0n would get a person blacklisted. Using this for fakenews wouldn't work because computer generated imagery has never been foolproof and it would forever destroy the credibility of who tried.

Deepfakes seems to be a media generated meme to selectively discredit videos. But this is just what has been on the Internet since video editing.
Until i murder someone on camera and deepfake your face on it, and make it look like a murder/suicide where you can't defend yourself. Or just cause enough chaos that by the time they figure it's fake the ignorant will have already caused enough atrocities.

What atrocities would result from investigating a murder suicide? You think a serial k*ller is going to go around k*lling people and "deep faking" others faces onto video? This would make for an okay Black Mirror episode but it's not really realistic.

Such a plan couldn't work unless you also had complete survelliance. Doing survelliance and murdering someone to make a snuff video...and then digitally editting someone else in is alot to invest in just framing someone.

Any compression artifacts or deepfakes detection software and the charges are immediately dismissed, the person exonerated, and a high profile search for the real suspect. If the perps operations security is weak their tech background and any access to deepfake software would create a unique profile, getting them unwanted attention.

Your scenario is only realistic if a well funded actor (like Intel agencies or a hit team) wants to k*ll the target and frame another. Even then the risk of discovery would negate the potential benefits of using the software. They would just k*ll the target if that was the goal. If it's to discredit someone then just look at what happened to Alex Jones. Even the one-off examples for deepfakes "threats" are nonsense.

So don't believe everythin' your earlobe captures, it's mostly backwards
Unless it happens to be as accurate as me
And everythin' said in song you happen to see
Then actually, believe half of what you see
None of what you hear, even if it's spat by me

I masked active shooter would definitely murder a room full of people then post a video deepfaked as someone elses face. The framed person may be k*lled before the public is made aware that the video was a deepfake.
