E-40's producers were TOO AHEAD of their time....1993

Noticing some crazy sh*t relistening to Federal from 1993
(reissued w some new beats in 94): image

1) Studio Ton chopped up Al Green's "I'm glad you're mine" drums to make the drums for Hide n Seek

you might recognize these drums as Timbaland's iconic rim snare he used a lot in the mid to late 90's

2) Extra Mannish might as well be a straight memphis beat.....

3) Drought Season employs a 808 hi hat doing 16ths with added 32 note rolls

which would become part of Mannie Fresh signature sound starting around 96'
for example this B.G. classic:
also used in DRAG EM N THA RIVER and many other Mannie classics

4) Title track listen to the synth strings at 3:49......Mannie Fresh and Lil Jon all day

Anyone know what happened to Studio Ton? He doesn't get any props for inspiring hella legendary sh*t and making so much classics with 40.....Mike Mosely too but at least he gets some coverage

That hide and seek is the best sh*t I heard from 40. It was like g rap on the run. That was a dope story rap. I pulled the beat back like 10 times that sh*t start off tough af. Those are the type of drums big had in story to tell idk if they used the same sample

it got that same rim and tom. Rakim used that too

Big also used the same Al Greene drum break on What's Beef. I think Nyshiem Myrick made both of those beats. I Got A Story To Tell and What's Beef.

They're kind of cheap these days, depending on what you're looking for. My local record shops always have a 1-5 dollar record bin. I scoop up a lot of gems that way.

Love this thread!

Studio Tone is criminally overlooked in the producer conversation and laced E40
with sone serious heat.

Ant Banks is also another heavyweight producer who is due his flowers!
