Titans receiver O.J. Murdock died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound this morning in Tampa, Fla., police said. Murdock shot himself in front of his high school in Tampa, according to the Tampa Tribune.
The Titans had placed Murdock on their did not report list over the weekend. When asked about Murdock’s absence, coach Mike Munchak said it was for “personal reasons.”
The Titans have been alerted of the situation and are gathering more information, a team spokesman said.
Murdock, a standout at Middleton High School in Tampa, was discovered by deputies in his car around 8:30 a.m. in front of the school.
He was tr@nsported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. Murdock, who played at South Carolina, suffered an Achilles injury last year in training camp and rehabbed with the team during the offseason.
He initially joined the Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2011, and spent last season on injured reserve. He never played in a game for the Titans.
