Mar 26 - Record 3.3 million unemployement claims filed this week.

.New York (CNN Business)A record number of Americans filed for their first week of unemployment benefits last week, as businesses shut down to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Initial jobless claims soared to a seasonally adjusted 3.28 million in the week ended March 21, according to the Department of Labor.
That is the highest number of initial jobless claims in history, since the Department of Labor started tracking the data in 1967. The previous high was 695,000 claims filed in the week ending October 2, 1982.
Last week's jump marked a massive increase from a revised 282,000 claims in the prior week. Prior to the pandemic, initial claims had been hovering in the low 200,000s each week, reflecting a strong job market.
But in the last couple weeks, the coronavirus outbreak has forced many businesses to suddenly shut down as the country tries to slow the spreading virus. For many businesses that also means laying off workers, at least temporarily.
That is the key difference between the coronavirus shock compared with past periods of economic distress: it is sudden and impacts virtually every industry and business model around.
Economists now expect the US economy to fall into a recession in the second quarter, before staging a comeback later in the year after the spread of the virus slows.
Meanwhile, state labor departments across the country are have struggled to deal with the sudden influx in claims for unemployment benefits. The New York Labor Department, for example, has added server capacity and hired more than 65 additional staff to handle all the claims that are suddenly pouring in. And last week, Florida's Department of Economic Opportunity said it planned to hire 100 extra staff to help answer calls and walk people through the application process.
And yall think that paltry stimulus deal that will take weeks (if not) months to ge t to people not to mention the loopholes the poor will have to go through to get it; was enough??? image

And republicans lead by Lindsay Graham are trying to block unemployment benefits while f*ghting the idea of their corporate sponsors having oversight over the 500 billion dollars in free money

But hey, GOP is the party of the people

All those people will be denied unemployment. Unemployment won’t start paying out until after people get stimulus checks. Those who get unemployment and stimulus will be forced to pay it back. These unemployment numbers are based off a shock to the system they will mean nothing in the long run.

People are blaming China for starting the pandemic and trying to cover it up. People are blaming trump for his poor handling of the pandemic. See the difference? Because it seems like you're confused.

That said, in the past couple days he has given decent press briefings. It's good to see he's finally starting to understand this issue.

In all fairness, this isn't on trump. The market was going to take a big hit regardless, and trump admitted as much, but it probably would have been in a year or two after trump is already out of office.

This is most definitely on Trump. Hes the one that told people this was the new Democratic hoax, that illnesses were going down and it would soon be gone, fired the pandemic team and did not stress the importance of testing early. It's on him and his administration solely. The stock market fall is a direct result of the failed leadership stated above.

As said. There were 60 million n1h1 cases and 12k deaths. There was no hysteria or lockdown s because Obama and his administration took it seriously.

Kinda. But this is a little different from N1H1. It's partially on trump, but not totally on trump. He handled the situation pretty bad, but we were destined to see the stock market drop no matter who was President, and unemployment was going to skyrocket. Maybe like a 1/3 of it is on trump, but you can't say the whole thing is trump's fault.

Exactly...in places nyc (where I live) People don't live ontop of each other and in condensed spaces like nyc which is also filled with air pollution which makes airborne illnesses easier to travel.

Likely everyone in NYC is likely to catch the virus. Likely half already have it. The low death rate and 80% of folks with light symptoms isn't worth closing the city. Majority of the hospital crowding is due to people who are experience light symptoms and freaking out after being told to stay home and self quarantine unless symptoms are severe plus people with other illnesses. Hospitals are not being overran by people with severe Corona symptoms and this has NEVER been reported. What has been reported is only 16% of the cities cases required hospitalization. Of that 16% only 23% have required ICU.

Stop making up sh*t and read sometime you dumb fu*k

So you're moronic a*s is saying that all the cases in NYC right now are not going to overfill the hospitals? You're saying all those people dying daily aren't dying right now in NYC, that only people with mild symptoms are going to the hospital? You think that is only an NYC problem? You not paying attention to the growing numbers in Florida, Louisiana?

Go jerk off one of your white conservative boyfriends so they can make you feel more important than you are

If our healthcare system shuts down cause of mass spread from sending people back to early then the country is going to shut down, hospitals won't be able to handle the already occurring surgeries and emergency situations

Also the increase in the elderly using more medicaid/medicare is going to cause a rise in your taxes because we subsidize those entitlements.
