image A Rwandan man who reportedly defied a nationwide coronavirus lockdown to go fishing has been k*lled and eaten by a crocodile, a local official told news outlets Wednesday.

The African country’s more than 12 million people have been under a stay-at-home order since Sunday to control the spread of COVID-19, which has infected at least 40 people in Rwanda so far.

Alice Kayitesi, the mayor of the southern Kamonyi district, said the tragic incident happened Wednesday morning in the Nyabarongo river.

“He had broken the stay-home rule," she told the BBC. “He’s among very few people here who are not co-operating with the lockdown to stop the virus.”

The victim’s name and age were not immediately released.

The tiny East African nation has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the region, but no deaths have been reported so far.

Those who had to be hospitalized are in stable condition and have been isolated from other patients, according to Rwanda’s health ministry.

Under the country’s two-week lockdown, non-essential businesses have shut down, travel between cities and districts is prohibited, unnecessary movement outside the home is banned, and borders are closed, except for goods and cargo as well as returning citizens and residents, who are then subject to a 14-day quarantine.

“The cooperation of Rwandans and residents is greatly appreciated, as are the efforts of those working hard in the health sector,” Rwanda’s health authorities said in a statement Tuesday.

Elsewhere in Africa, the countries with the most COVID-19 cases so far are South Africa, with more than 400, followed by Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Burkina Faso and Senegal, according to the World Health Organization’s latest figures
