The Official Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders thread - Week 15

Folks, I have a feeling this is going to be one for the record books. And by that I mean it could shatter the single-game record for most boneheaded indefensible penalties by two teams in a head to head matchup.

It goes without saying that games at this point in the season have playoff implications, and this is a huge one for both teams. A win for Detroit (coupled with the inevitable Bears loss this week) All but secures their first playoff bid since 1991, a Raiders win could very well put Oakland in a tie for first in their division, as Denver has a tough draw this week with New England

(Apologies to Raiders nation, I literally do not know of any other players on your team that will actually be playing in this game.. Even Seaba$s has been questionable for over half of your games)

PREVIEW
The Raiders host and face the Detroit Lions for the first time since 2007 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland this Sunday.Detroit and Oakland meet in an NFL game on Sunday afternoon for the first time since the 2007 campaign where the Detroit Lions earned the 36-21 road win at the Raiders as a +2 ˝ point underdog.
The total flew well over the closing line of 39 ˝ points. The Detroit Lions will travel to Oakland with a record of 8-5 on the season. The club is 4-2 on the road.
Detroit averages 28 points and 376 yards per game with 100 rushing yards for 4.4 yards a carry.
On defense the Lions allow 23 points and 345 yards per game. Teams run for 136 yards against them for 5.1 yards per rush against average.
The Lions broke their two game losing streak last week in their 34-28 home win against the Minnesota Vikings last week as a -10 point betting favorite.
The over under came in at over the closing total of 47 points.
The Lions were able to gain 280 offensive yards with 72 coming from their run game on 21 rushes.
The team allowed five sacks and scored one touchdown in their three red zone attempts.
Detroit had no turnovers and took six away from Minnesota.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 20 of 29 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns.
Keiland Williams had 12 carries for 43 yards.
Maurice Morris ran for 13 yards on four rushing attempts.
Rookie wide out Titus Young led Detroit with four receptions for 87 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Brandon Pettigrew caught six passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Calvin Johnson caught three balls for 29 yards.
Detroit allowed Minnesota 425 offensive yards with 269 yards rushing on 35 runs from crimmage.
The Lions recorded four sacks and gave up three Vikings touchdowns in their four tries inside he red zone.
While Detroit is 5-0 against teams with losing records, it's 3-5 when facing clubs .500 or better. The Lions also have been outscored 68-30 while losing their last two road games to the Bears and Saints.

That mark could improve against an Oakland team that has been outscored 80-30 during consecutive losses at Miami and Green Bay following a three-game winning streak.
The skid has dropped the Raiders from first place in the AFC West to one game behind division-leading Denver. Oakland is one of three teams one game behind New York for the final wild-card spot.
"Obviously we're still in the thick of this thing," coach Hue Jackson said. "It's still all out in front of us. It doesn't feel that way, obviously, after the last two weeks. The reality is that's what it is. So on we go."
As the Raiders move on, they need to find ways to score points and stop the opponent from doing so.
Oakland, which has given up at least 31 points five times, fell behind 34-0 in each of its last two games. Though the Raiders have yielded 517 rushing yards over the past three weeks, their biggest challenge Sunday could be trying to stop Stafford. He's thrown a touchdown pa$s in 15 straight games and is 246 yards shy of becoming the third player in Detroit history to pa$s for 4,000.
"We understand that nobody's perfect," Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain said. "You're not going to play perfect. But you don't want to make the mistakes that we've been making."
Offensively, Carson Palmer has thrown five interceptions over the last two games, including four in a 46-16 loss to the Packers last Sunday.
With star running back Darren McFadden still nursing an injured foot, the Raiders have gone more than 14 quarters and 99 carries without a run of at least 20 yards after having 19 in the first 9 1/2 games.
"We need to play much better than we did the last two weeks," Palmer said. "Our backs are against the wall. Our team understands where we are and what's at stake."
Palmer, who has completed 66.2 percent of his passes for 494 yards with four TDs and four interceptions while winning both career starts against the Lions, could have deep-threat Denarius Moore back after he missed the past three games with a foot injury.
Lions star Calvin Johnson caught four passes for 70 yards with a touchdown in a 36-21 win at Oakland in 2007 in the last matchup. That was Detroit's first victory in five road games against the Raiders.
Detroit has won the last two meetings after dropping four straight and six of seven in the series.

A brief lookahead to Week 15's Detroit-Oakland game:

1. Expect referees with itchy trigger fingers Sunday as the teams tied for most personal fouls committed this season (27) meet at O.co Coliseum with playoff aspirations on the line. Lions DT Ndamukong Suh returns from his two-game suspension for stomping on a Green Bay Packers offensive lineman on Thanksgiving. With a win, Detroit (8-5) could be in position to clinch a playoff berth before they meet the Packers in the season's final week. Oakland (7-6) could take back a share of first place in the AFC West with a win and a Denver loss to New England.

2. Both teams have dropped two of their last three and the Vikings were a botched call away from dropping last week's meeting with the division-worst Vikings. Following a 46-16 loss to Green Bay, the Raiders are the first team to fall behind 34-0 in consecutive weeks since the 1984 Buffalo Bills. Once the early-season standard for NFL rushing success, the Raiders have gone 99 carries in a row without a run of at least 20 yards. The Raiders and the Lions are on pace to become the first teams since the 1970 merger to allow at least five yards per carry in a season.

3. Player to watch -- Raiders QB Carson Palmer: Oakland's midseason acquisition is coming off the second four-INT game of career, with the previous coming in 2007 vs. Arizona. Suh's return means Palmer will meet a stronger pa$s rush but he will benefit from the return of Denarius Moore from injury. The last time Palmer threw four picks in a game, he bounced back with his most accurate game as a pro (32 for 38, 283 yards vs. Tennessee).[/b]

FAVORED:

The Oakland Raiders are coming off a demoralizing loss in which they were dominated by the Green Bay Packers, and next they're playing host to another tough NFC North team, the Detroit Lions. Oakland has been bit by the injury bug lately, and it's definitely cost them - though it's unlikely they would have beat the Packers anyway - their playoff positioning. Detroit is also battling for playoff position, currently slotted as the final seed in the NFC, and will not be a pushover, especially with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh back in the lineup.

Odds Shark has posted some odds for the game, and the teams come out as even in the spread. Detroit is favored online slightly in some cases, and when it comes to point favorites, they're never more than one-and-a-half point favorites, with Top Bet and Bet Online having them as just one-point favorites.

Maybe that's because Oakland is looking like they might be getting a little bit closer to being healthy. Or maybe it's because the Lions are just penalized so much. The site cautions against picking the Lions on the over due to Oakland likely playing tough coming off a humiliating loss. It's probably good advice.

MY PREDICTION:
Short and sweet: The team that commits fewer penalties will come out on top. Suh comes out this week on a rampage. Lots of interceptions thrown by both teams. This game starts off ugly but ends up being a shootout.

Lions 35
Raiders 30
