Actual artist in an industry where it's not really about that anymore will always have niche fans but we all know the sound the masses get spoon fed these days ..not earl

The answer is, he was never that big to begin with. The only artists that really did big numbers from OFWGKTA we're Frank and Tyler. But Frank had the Def Jam machine behind him.

Tyler did 45k first week with Goblin in 2011 and Wolf did 90k in 2013. Earl did about 50k in 2013, which isn't bad. Keep in mind that Earl’s sound has always been less commercial than Tyler’s, especially from 2015 on.

Like others have said, he's occupied the underground rapper lane since 2018 and seems most comfortable there.

I think him getting sent away is the reason for that coz his first video was gonna def put him as the biggest artist in of..i remember people comparing dude to Eminem at first

His last two releases were stellar.

Not for boring n*ggas tho ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some Rap Songs is criminally slept on.
"Some Rap Songs" is borderline retarded brah & that serves as an example of why he aint blow up,, other than the fact he's a recluse.

Also, he made it hard for himself to tour by being so lyrical

If you've ever watched one of his performances from the last few years before covid, he gets cottonmouth after like 5 songs because he's like 1000 words in He even says it on stage. I feel him though

Earl is still a beast though. He's just "different"

He talked about all this in his music

Didnt like the fame

The pressure and lifestyle got to him. Strained his friendships & relationships, got hooked on pills for a minute. He’s openly talked about how he hates public fan interactions too… sh*ts it’s even a video of him breaking some kids phone for tryna record him in public

that superstar sh*t isn’t for everyone… he seems to be at peace now

Never chased the fame like that.

He has his niche crowd of loyal supporters. I'm sure he wouldn't have it any other way.

Couple things earl looked like he was slow ,(look wise)
He went to weird, Tyler knew how to do it in a tolerable manner.
Blew his shot then boarding school happened and finished the job. He still earns but he could have been as big as his forehead

this is one of the worst songs ever made by anybody anywhere

the mental gymnastics "rEaL hIp-HoP hEaDs" will go through to sh*t on any mainstream artist while championing this type of sh*t is hilarious. There's a reason most popular music is popular: it's well done.

That said, Earl is usually dope and I like him for what he does, but it's hardly marketable. He's perfect for a cult following and long career like a Techn9ne or MF Doom or Hopsin

Because he's garbage, raps about absolutely nothing and hangs out with Tyler the Bussy Creamator and Frank Moisture. Whole squad full of f*ggits

2 things-

The main one being- he got too heavy into pills and weed, which dulled his spirit and the quality of his music.

He also had an identity crisis early on where it seemed like he felt he wasn’t traditionally/culturally black enough- and had to become more urban. You can see the change in some of his last interviews with odd future, where he seemed more forced/fake. Which to me felt like he was going against his natural self which is more of a skater kid. So his flows just changed because of that. Where to me- the early earl sweatshirt was the most clear and genuine

Either way this type of stuff comes from mental health issues- not a diss.

his parents

they sent him away for school right as he was gaining notoriety.
that k*lled all of his buzz
Naw fam you can’t say that because when he got back he had a huge buzz. Tbh his fan base just grew up and wasn’t into that weird sh*t they thought was cool when they 11-14 age range. Tyler content matured a lot as he got older where as earl was still rapping like he did when he was 15. When his sound did mature he didn’t have an audience to cater to either. The boy got serious skills but I think he satisfied with the underground.

LOL He's got an album called I Don't Like sh*t, I Don't Go Outside. Earl got sent to boarding school. When he got back he lost his initial lyrical ability a bit but was still good.

Then as time passed he got older and depressed, had an acid trip and realized he was rapping about k*lling and evil sh*t and didn't want to play with that dark energy anymore. He also just lowkey anyway.

He explains some it in this song.

Feel this cage when that acid fade,
Face the same but your mind will change

Asking God for favors, guess he isn't home
Probably 'cause that fu*king faith I didn't show
Skippin church, flip the work

Came up off of work that my conscience wasn't in

Everything pretty much said in this thread already. With that being said... Doris is a classic in my opinion.... that sound he had with Vince Staples was raw

Grief was hard too.... one of my favorite songs by him....

“I don’t act hard, I’m a hard act to follow n*gga”

And of course Dat a*s & EARL songs are my personal favorite singles
