500 contracts sold at $12.50 and they rolled it down to the $260 puts bought at $3.75. Stock still selling off, down to $257 now.
Just looking for some enlightenment. What does all of this mean? I own shares of some stuff, but I’m mostly holding everything and don’t trade day to day. My bad for the bother man just tryna get some knowledge....

Those were options trades, not stocks. Someone bought 1,000 $270 put options at $0.45 ($45,000) for TMO on Monday looking for the stock to go lower when it was around $280/share. The stock sold off all week to $255-$260 and those puts were worth about $1.5M.

There are different trading vehicles in the market that are tradable. Options being one of the most popular as of late.

Stocks,Options,Bonds

Options were originally used to hedge against a position.
For example, you’re going long on $AAPL and it’s going against you. You might
Want to hedge and get some “PUT” options.

There is a lot more to it, but to keep it basic.

Buy a “CALL” option if you think the price of a stock is going to move up.
Buy a “PUT” option if you think the price of a stock will fall.

I can explain further if you want. Have to go right now.

OK, So for DT (Day Trading) purposes options are used like you would trade stocks. The difference is that an option is not a stock in the traditional sense.

When you buy a share of $AAPL at the current market price of $203.86 that's your cost for 1 share.

an option contract is a bundle of *100* shares, so you are essentially buying "100" shares of company "x" for a fraction of the price. sort of. lol

So let's say you buy a "CALL" because you think the price of the stock will rise.
You need to select a "STRIKE" price, this is the price you think it will go to.

Not only do you need a "STRIKE" price, but you also need an "EXPIRATION DATE", Meaning the contract will end on that date.( YOU CAN SELL AT ANY POINT)

Things To Know.
- Price of contract is impacted by the price of the stock.
- Options are purchased in the form of a contract
- 1 contract contains 100 shares.
- Strike Price
- Expiration Date

The price you pay is :
Contract Price x 100 = Trade Value

So if a contract is $1.68

$1.68 x 100 = $168

So If we take this example;

"Those were options trades, not stocks. Someone bought 1,000 $270 put options at $0.45 ($45,000) for TMO on Monday looking for the stock to go lower when it was around $280/share. The stock sold off all week to $255-$260 and those puts were worth about $1.5M."

0.45 x 1,000 contracts which are (100,000 shares) = $45,000 For some reason Think or Swim doesn't show April options chain, So it must be a Typo. so let's make something up. lol

Based on the chart :
Friday Hi: 283.89
CURRENT CLOSE PRICE: $259.78
$270 Strike PUTS $32.42 Loss

if it hit $10 and you collected that premium of
$9.55
9.55 x 1000 contracts (100,000 shares) = $955,000 is your gain.
