The issue with the cap isn't simply wandering into it. With exceptions and other types of trickery, you can reach $20 million above the cap and avoid the luxury. It's when you are in the luxury i think 3yrs in a row or three times in four years, then you start getting taxed at an increased rate. Mikhail Prokorov was a repeat offender and was routinely paying $80 million in luxury tax every year. I've read estimates of him losing $100 million a year. Only under unique circumstances can anyone do that sh*t.

The unique circumstances for him were that he was already worth something like $9 billion, legally. Illegally, who the fuk knows... rumored closer to $20 billion. He bought the Nets for about $180 million. Built a stadium and the surrounding area (put in $200 million personally)... and then sold it in less than 10 years for $2.4 billion. $2.4 being more than the clippers sold for and more than the rockets sold for. So even if he lost $100 million every year, he STILL made a billion dollars.

One of the best guards in the nba....he deserves his money. Good for him, since he had that baby, he has been a completely different player...
