NFL.

Cowboys were a dynasty. Niners were completing their dynasty. Green Bay resurfaced as a winner with Favre. Elway got to two chips. Jags and Panthers were added to the league.

Jordan was the only thing carrying the NBA. Magic and Bird were done. Lakers and Celtics were trending down until late in the decade. Knicks couldn't win. Smaller markets like San Antonio, Miami, Indiana weren't getting national attention.

MJ and the Bulls were must see tv nightly and global icons bruh. You know that. They were more popular than the entire NFL.

It wasn't like today though were you had access to every NBA game. Bulls were on TV a couple times a week max. Plus Jordan missed 3 years of the decade due to retirements.

I mean they interrupted the Rockets/Knicks finals game when OJ was on the highway lol. I dunno if they'd do that during the Superbowl.

The Bulls had their own channel (WGN) that broadcasted every game and was included in every cable package MJ missed 3 years and came back more popular than ever each time.

As far as the Super Bowl thing, nothing has ever happened to that extent during it so we can’t say for sure. See how much hype there was when that Bulls doc came out last year? No NFL story can’t do that.

We can agree to disagree though my guy

NBA. Maybe the MJ retirement years, you could argue NFL, but once he came back the NBA reigned over the NFL until MJ’s next retirement.

In America it’s always been the NFL and it’s not even close.

Anyone that disagrees is delusional.

Edit: link for reference

A better argument would be NBA vs. Baseball..

Jim Kelly was more popular than 90s Shaq? Or Penny? Or Rodman? Or Pippen? Or even young Kobe?

As a whole, the obvious answer is the NFL. But as a singular star/icon - no one in the NFL was touching MJ. He’s still an icon and hasn’t played basketball in 20 years.

MJ was probably as popular as like the top three NFL teams in terms of marketability and such. But the rest of the NFL royally sh*tted on the rest of the NBA. It is what it is.

Being from Chicago, the NBA was bigger here in the 90's than NFL because of Jordan and the NBA was more violent than it is now. But no doubt the NFL is the biggest American sport because of the violence. Your age also matters too, because the older you get you start to prefer football over basketball because of the physicality. Americans like to see other people get hit, dropped, and laid out that's a fact and the NFL provides that. It's like the Roman Coliseum except with n*ggas. NHL has the violence Americans like too. What holds the NHL back is that it isn't racially diverse enough but I remember the NHL being bigger in the 90's due to ESPN.
