Tesla launches Solarglass (Solar Roof V3) starting at $33,950 for average home

Tesla is launching Solarglass today, a third version of its Solar Roof tiles, which are now cheaper and more beautiful than a concrete tile roof with solar panels, according to the company.

It now starts at about $34,000 after incentives for an average home.

When Tesla launched its Solar Roof Tiles in 2017, the automaker said that it would start volume production and installation in 2018.

However, the rollout turned out to be much slower and installations have been limited to the homes of some executives and a few customers.

Tesla later delayed volume production to 2019.

CEO Elon Musk said that they had to make some changes to the product in order to make sure it will last for 30 years and become cheaper.

Today, they are launching the version 3 of their solar roof tiles, which they are also calling ‘Tesla Solar Glass’.

The new version of the tiles is less expensive, faster to install, and it will last longer.

Musk said in the announcement:

“With version 3, we managed to achieve a cost less than what the average cost plus retrofit solar panels.”

Tesla now lists a base 2,000 ft² roof with 10 kW of solar roof tiles installed will cost $33,950 after incentives:

Tesla expects to be able to quickly ramp up production of these new solar tiles over the next few months – resulting in a significant economy of scale and reducing the cost.

Musk claims that Tesla can quickly ramp up to producing 1,000 roofs per week at Tesla’s Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo.

However, the biggest difference with the latest version of the Tesla Solar Roof tiles is that the made it easier to install.

Earlier this year, Electrek released a first look at Tesla’s V3 solar roof tile technology with custom fittings and the first real Tesla Solar Roof quote.

Today, Tesla’s management confirmed that those fittings are being streamlined with the new version of the solar roof and they reduced the customization and special tools needed to install a solar roof.

When first Tesla Solar Roof, Tesla said that it should take roughly the same time to install a solar roof as a tile roof installation, which is typically 5-7 days.

We previously reported that Tesla Solar Roof installations were still taking about 2 weeks, which adds to the cost of the product and makes it hard to scale.

Musk said that they are focusing on significantly reducing the time required to install the tiles.

Tesla is basically running installation competitions to install the solar roof as fast and efficiently as possible at their own facility in Fremont to improve installation time. The CEO sees the potential to get it done in a day with a relatively big crew.

Musk said that Tesla will also work with third-party installers to certify them for solar roof installations and expect the program to help grow solar adoption.

Installations are starting right now with the existing backlog of orders and the company is taking new orders that should start next year.

The CEO said that he expects Tesla’s Solarglass to become the best option for people who want a new roof because he believes it will be the best-looking option that also happens to produce solar power.

Tesla has been trying to find a way to create product differentiation in the solar space, which is dominated by a few kinds of very similar solar panels and this new solar tile product is certainly different.

Earlier this week, Musk said that Tesla Energy is becoming a “distributed global utility” through its solar and energy storage business, which he believes could outgrow automotive business.

Need a lot of information on this. Need to see how durable this is to hail, high winds, ice damming, and other severe weather. What if you need something coming outta your roof like a new vent furnace, how do you cut around it?

Sorry I don't have a link to back it up...but I have a smaller 2 br house....my starting costs weren't quite expensive but the cost vs what I was currently paying it was gonna take me like 15 years to break even or some stupid sh*t like that by which better tech would've come out....I dunno where this helps other than if your roof is completely fu*ked or it's a new construction

Great idea but I'm getting some kind or roof work done every 4 years or so because of a hurricane or hail event down here in New Orelans.

That worries be about this.
Will they be enough qualified techs to repair?

Out here in Phoenix, it should be a requirement that all houses have solar panels. I think we're somewhere around 20% of all electric power in phoenix proper is on solar

granted the economics has to make sense, but idk about living under a solar panel like that. im basket case paranoid when it comes to health hazards esp. all these new tech (cell phones with stronger signals than ever being closer than ever to my body cavity, sitting on a bed of batteries in these electrics cars etc) tho

maybe if im on a high rise say on the 25th fl of a 45 floor building, ok maybe sanction the committee to install them on the roof hoping that ppl living above me will absorb all the radiation/rays

Walmart sues Tesla over solar panel fires at seven stores

Lora Kolodny | @lorakolodny

Published 4:33 PM ET Tue, 20 Aug 2019 Updated 9 Hours Ago CNBC.com

Walmart is suing Tesla for breach of contract after Tesla solar panels ignited atop seven of its stores.
Tesla and Walmart have been partners on clean energy initiatives for years; more than 240 Walmart stores have Tesla solar systems installed.
Walmart has also pre-ordered at least 45 Tesla electric semi-trucks to add to its vehicle fleet.

Walmart issuing Elon Musk's electric vehicle and clean energy company after Tesla solar panels atop seven of the retailer's stores allegedly caught fire, according a court filing.

The Walmart suit alleges breach of contract, gross negligence and failure to live up to industry standards. Walmart is asking Tesla to remove solar panels from more than 240 Walmart locations where they have been installed, and to pay damages related to all the fires Walmart says that Tesla caused.

The Walmart suit, filed in the state of New York, alleges that: "As of November 2018, no fewer than seven Walmart stores had experienced fires due to Tesla's solar systems - including the four fires described above and three others that had occurred earlier." The filing details evacuations, damaged property and inventory.

Tesla's stock dropped more than 1% after hours on the news.

Walmart claimed, among myriad complaints, that "Tesla routinely deployed individuals to inspect the solar systems who lacked basic solar training and knowledge." In the suit, they also alleged that Tesla failed to ground its solar and electrical systems properly, and that Tesla-installed solar panels on-site at Walmart stores contained a high number of defects that were visible to the nekkid eye, and which Tesla should have found and repaired before they led to fires.

Tesla has been trying to revive its solar business of late.

On Sunday, CEO Elon Musk announced in a string of tweets that customers in some states can now rent Tesla's residential, solar rooftop systems without a contract. The offer is available in six states, and will cost customers at least $50 a month (or $65 a month in California).

Although Musk touted the ease of cancelling a rented roof at anytime, the fine print on Tesla's website mentions a $1,500 fee to take out the solar panels and restore the customer's roof.

In the second quarter of 2019, Tesla installed a mere 29 megawatts of solar, a record low for the company in a single quarter. In its heyday, Tesla's solar division (formerly SolarCity) installed over 200 megawatts in a single quarter.

When Tesla acquired SolarCity in 2016 for around $2.6 billion the deal caused controversy that continues to this day.

SolarCity was founded and run by Musk's first cousins, Peter and Lyndon Rive. Prior to Tesla's acquisition, Musk owned about one-fifth of SolarCity stock, which was valued around $575 million at the end of 2015. While SolarCity had been a successful solar installer in the prior decade, its stock was plummeting, and debt had ballooned to $3.4 billion before the deal closed.

In an investor presentation meant to drum up support for the acquisition, Musk showed off what appeared to be sleek, glass solar roof tiles. Rather than bulky panels, they looked like premium shingles. The solar roof tiles are still not widely distributed or mass-manufactured.

Walmart declined to comment. Tesla did not respond to requests for comment.

sounds dope. I really can't wait until battery technology changes. I remember seeing something on 60 minutes years ago about batteries being able to last 100x longer, but I guess that fell through.
